Shauna Summers, Bantam Dell editor, arrives at Squawk Radio on Tuesday May 8 and Wednesday May 9 to visit, answer your questions about writing and publishing, and restore order among the Squawkers.
Christina Dodd, now revealed as the normal Squawker, continues to work on the third book of the Fortune Hunter series while awaiting the publication of the first two books in her new paranormal series with SCENT OF DARKNESS (July) and TOUCH OF DARKNESS (August.) When asked about the Darkness Chosen series, she said, “The paranormals are fun to write because when the characters are talking about curses or uttering a prophecy, the language can have a more historical feel. And although the books are set in the modern world, men who can turn themselves into predators may have trouble containing their primal urges and are therefore willing to chase a woman into the forest during a thunderstorm . . . and having told you that, I will let your imagination run wild, just as mine did!” Read excerpts, enter the contest for an arc of SCENT OF DARKNESS, and explore the special world of Darkness Chosen on Christina’s website!
SQUAWK SUNDAY UPDATE!
The Squawkers want to thank everybody for making our SECOND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION such a rousing success! This week we’ll be announcing the winners of last week’s contest, including a prize for some clever soul who talked/cajoled/coaxed a friend into signing up for our Member List and a prize for the talkee/cajolee/coaxee randomly chosen from all of those who sent in their names. Our exciting line-up this week includes a Guest Appearance from author Toni Blake on Tuesday so do pop in to make Toni feel welcome at the henhouse!
TERESA spent her days writing and her evenings painting her office and now gets to pick out a lovely new wallpaper border to go with all of her Barbies and Russell Crowe paraphenalia. Since she doesn’t want to be completely bereft of entertainment on this lazy Sunday afternoon, she’s including a lovely photo of Josh Holloway from LOST to brighten your afternoon.
CHRISTINA would like to thank everyone for the charming comments on her office tour blog. She was traveling in the wilds of Idaho this week and wasn’t able to get to a computer to respond. She saw the comments about the print behind her desk and wants to explain that it’s not a pregnant dragon, just a very full one. The print is called ONE KNIGHTER and it shows one very satisfied dragon lying on her back picking her teeth with a sword while surrounded by the remnants of a suit of armor
...
(OMG! I just got home, and I just realized ... my dragon ate the knight from Teresa’s office!!!
Oh, dear, dear, dear.)
Christina will also be giving away 3 advanced reading copies of her very first paranormal SCENT OF DARKNESS in her May Contest so pop over to www.christinadodd.com this week to enter! The contest starts May 1st.
ELOISA has a very special announcement about her Bulletin Board...her BB isn’t HERS anymore—it’s Eloisa James’s and Julia Quinn’s Bulletin Board! We’ve had an exciting month settling in, and now we decided it’s time to go public. So please come say hello. Just to give you a double incentive, tomorrow (Monday the 30th) is a very exciting day. It’s the one-year anniversary of the Eloisa James BB—and the one-month anniversary of the EJ & JQ BB. So we’re offering a present. A very special present. Please stop by… Anyone who comments on the BB tomorrow is eligible for this prize, which hasn’t been announced on the BB. There’s a clue to it in the picture above! Eloisa James and Julia Quinn Bulletin Board
Week 2 of the Squawk Radio Second Anniversary celebration starts tomorrow!
Stay tuned for a special letter to our mailing list and more entertainment, more classic blogs, more camaraderie (which is a polite way of saying the Squawkers are in prime insult form) and more prizes!
So as my daughter and I (Christina) were driving past the movie theaters, I looked at the shows listed and said, “There isn’t a movie out right now I want to see.” Then I did a double take. “There’s a movie called ERECT STRANGER?” My daughter looked back at the other side of the sign and said, “Mom, it’s PERFECT STRANGER.” Apparently someone removed two of the letters, pushed them together so it looked normal, and created a movie I would definitely like to see.
Which brings me to the subject of titles. My editor wants a title for the third book in the Fortune Hunter series, after TROUBLE IN HIGH HEELS and TONGUE IN CHIC, something suspenseful, clever and fun. Brilliant ideas welcome!
Eloisa here...I spent the week frantically running from meeting to meeting (it’s the end of semester, a terrible few weeks for professors). But in the back of my mind I am brewing the book I’m writing. And the morning after I posted my blog on classic first lines, I woke up with this opening in my mind. I thought it might amuse you:
The vicar had seen female breasts before. Just never unclothed.
I hope you have a wonderful week....while I try to figure out who the vicar is and—perhaps even more crucially—whose breasts he’s viewing! Please enjoy all the wonderful prizes we have lined up for you this week!!
Teresa took a badly needed break from writing on Friday to enjoy a Girl’s Day Out with some dear friends. You can see from this pic where their very stop was! (Yes, the HOT sign was on. And yes, Teresa was driving. And yes, there was much joyful squealing and squealing of brakes.) The day ended at Steak ‘N’ Shake for cheeseburgers and shakes but alas, there were no cameras. Oh the debauchery! It was a real Bacchanalian revel!

Christina Dodd welcomes all the new visitors and all the old friends to Squawk Radio, and hopes everyone enjoys our wonderful two weeks of classic blogs, group debates, merciless teasing and prizes. We have a lot of fun planned! Christina’s news — she’s working on her next romantic suspense, the third in the Fortune Hunter series. She had a great thrill — she got her arcs for SCENT OF DARKNESS (July 2007) and sees a great contest in your future! Read an excerpt on Christina’s website! For herself … with the coming of sunny weather, she’s been walking up her hill every day, and remembers why she hates exercise so much. There has to be a better way to stay in shape. Thinking about it should work … thinking about it hard … it’s working ... I’m sure it’s working ...
In a bid to enjoy the spring CONNIE has been working none stop on revising SKINNY-DIPPING (January 2008) by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Yes, this may seem like an abitrary deadline. I mean what difference does it make whether it’s in at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. ? BECAUSE I WANT IT DONE, DAMMIT! (Yes, Connie ios also cranky) But, I did manage to hop out last night for the Minnesota Breast Cancer Fund-Raising Event where my “You’re a Character” auction item (the winner’s name is used as one of the secondary characters in my novella contribution to THE LIST) netted $1500.00. BOO-RAH!
ELOISA has a fabulous new contest running on her site—EloisaJames.com. Please come check it out—you might win an ARC of Eloisa’s upcoming book, Desperate Duchesses—or a set of chocolate dominos. Why dominos, you ask? Because this novel features a very naughty game of dominos!
SQUAWKERS SUNDAY UPDATE
Good morning, sunshines! Spring has sprung and we’re springing a new weekend format on you. Liz’s Music Blog can now be found on Saturday and you’ll now be able to check SQUAWK RADIO every Sunday for all of the exciting updates on what each Squawker is up that week plus find tantalizing tidbits on what’s coming up on the blog. Just to give you a sneak peek for the month, we’ve got bestselling author Julie Kenner visiting the coop on April 10th and 11th and beginning April 16th, we’ll be celebrating SQUAWK RADIO’s Second Anniversary for TWO WHOLE WEEKS with a lot of opportunities for you to win some very special Squawker prizes. And have no fear--our Book Blogs will continue but we’ll be doing them during the week at regular intervals. You can check back during the day today to read updates from each of the Squawkers. (Well, at least each of the Squawkers we can track down on such a spectacular spring Sunday.)
TERESA (featured here in her new publicity photo) just signed a new contract to write 3 more books for 15 million dollars apiece. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer called to inform her they would be making back-to-back movies of AFTER MIDNIGHT and THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED ME starring Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp. She generously agreed to play the heroines in both films. The Romance Writers of America organization called this week to inform her that there had been an accounting mistake in previous years and she was actually supposed to receive all 7 RITA Awards that she had been nominated for. She is currently clearing a spot on her mantel for the RITAS next to her Pulitzer Prize for Literature and her Oscar for Best Screenplay (for the movie adaptation of BREATH OF MAGIC). She’ll be jetting off to Hawaii this week to film her guest spot on LOST where she will replace Kate in both Jack and Sawyer’s affections (after a brief yet passionate fling in Sayid’s arms) before jetting back to L.A. (on her private jet) to help Jack Bauer save the world on 24. Upon her return to her 30,000 square foot mansion where every wall is lined with a bookshelf (eat your heart out, Xtina Dodd), she plans to cash in her winning lottery ticket and invest her 340 million dollar winnings to end hunger, bring about world peace and buy some really great shoes. And oh yeah… HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S DAY!!!
Good morning from Lisa, who spent all last night in jail after going to another one of those wild parties with Russell, who got a little crazy, and then we got locked in the same cell together, and . . . okay, I actually went out with my husband, my daughter, and a pair of eleven year-old boys, and we saw “Meet The Robinsons.” (Which IMO proved that no amount of great animation can compensate for a flawed story, and this comes from the biggest Disney fan alive.) Finally got all the dry cleaning back after unpacking from the book tour, and it’s STILL nice to be home. I am still working on settling into a groove for my next contemporary, the sequel to SUGAR DADDY, and trying to “clean up” my flowery descriptive historical language. And I’m expecting the page proofs for my October 08 historical, MINE TILL MIDNIGHT, to be here pretty soon, and maybe have some cover news! Happy April 1st to everyone, and try not to be too trusting today!
Christina Dodd has not been swept away on the wings of delusion, darn it, but she does admire the effects of the cold medicine Teresa’s been taking. Instead I’ve spent the week reading and re-reading the copy edit for TOUCH OF DARKNESS, book 1 for DARKNESS CHOSEN, and comparing it to the page proofs of SCENT OF DARKNESS, book 2 for DARKNESS CHOSEN, and trying desperately to make sure that eye color, hair color, height, number of bad guys, wing span and length of snout (hey, these are paranormals!) remains the same from book to book. Good luck to me. I’m also writing a romantic suspense, book 3 of the Fortune Hunter series, and may just have discovered the most unusual place for a hero and heroine to have sex ever. (No, not on top of the bookshelves.)
