CHRISTINA DODD CELEBRATES THE FIRST FIFTEEN YEARS OF HER WRITING CAREER
76 Comments
Christina… Brilliant as always. Funny, serious, meaningful, emotional, but above all funny. Our state is lucky to have you. I’m sure all the hunky young men of the town you live in who toiled relentlessly shirtless on your house are lucky, too. I look forward to reading another fifteen-year post in 2022.
Woo Hoo Christina. WELL SAID each and every point.
Congrats on the 15 years ... and
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SQUAWK RADIO!
Christina, ‘Candle in the Window’ is a classic! How I loved this book..it’s what led me to your web site and squawk radio! I’m sure a lot of the writers here are lapping up your wisdom. I’m sure laboring away by yourself is not always delightful, but the results are!
-Great teaser/exerpt..can’t wait..
Just love, love your books, Lady!
And I need a paranormal! It would fit in nicely with the last weeks of school--teaching is often a paranormal adventure, I think.
Hi Christina ~ Congratulations on 15 plus years published! You’re a wonderfully talented writer and I hope your remarkable career continues on as one long NEVER ENDING STORY.
I thoroughly enjoyed your “TOP TEN POINTS OF WISDOM” blog when I read it last year and I enjoyed rereading it today—it brought a smile of delight to my face both times. Your books have always done that for me as well—Thank you. I’m happy to say I’m part of point #3. And I’m sooo looking forward to the release of SCENT OF DARKNESS in July.
And a big HAPPY 2nd ANNIVERSARY to all the lovely and extraordinarily talented Squawk Radio Authors… Connie, Eloisa, Lisa, Liz, Teresa and Christina!
All the Best,
Irene M.
Congrats on 15 years!! I can’t wait to read your paranormals. I have to say that I do NOT want to write a book, I’ll leave that to the experts.
Aw Xtina, is that your new publicity photo at the top there? (And were you the one who sent me that apple last week?)
Congratulations on 15 years of being published!
Love the points of wisdom.
The birthday blogs have been so entertaining.
Congratulations on 15 years Xtina! I can’t wait to read SCENT OF DARKNESS. It sounds great!
Xtina:
You make it look so easy, and you look so damn good doing it. ‘nough said.
Congratulations on 15 years, although how you’ve been published that long when you’re only 25 is quite a feat. (Will that earn me an arc?) Seriously, I love your books they are always a great read.
Here’s to another 15 years!
Di
Christina, I think I’ve been reading your books for at least 14 of the 15 years. Your books are always an automatic purchase for me.
I am just hoping that 15 years from now I’ll be invited to list my pearls of publishing wisdom on a site just like this one.
Congratulations on 15 years. I always buy your books. Your new series sounds great.
Yeah congrats on 15 years of wonderful books. I can’t wait to read your new series. Ohhh paranormal. I’ll check out the exerpt
Congratulations Christina! Wishing you all the best and many more years of writing.
Happy Anniversary Squawkers and Squawkettes!
Sometimes I think that our contribution to this world is to let other people enjoy our work, whatever it is we do
Christina, thank you for 15+ years of your work. I’m looking forward to the next 15, especially if it includes paranormals!
Christina,
I enjoyed the blog. I guess if i were an author I wouldn’t read my reviews either.
Princess
Christina, Congrats for your fifteen year anniversary! Your books are all on my keeper shelf and even though I’m not much of a paranormal reader, I’ll be ordering your book off Amazon because you’re a must-read for me!
Love,
Julie
I haven’t read “the book that will not die yet.” It has gone on my to be bought list. My TBR pile is already huge but what are summers for.
Oh, I missed this post the first time, and IT’S SO GREAT!!!! Thank you, Christina!
And I’m relieved to know I’m not the only one who can’t remember names. Friends’ names, characters’ names. Doesn’t matter.
When I first got my agent, I was talking to her about revisions and totally spaced on several names. “Then, uh. . . You know. . . The hero. . . Um.” “Caleb?” “Yes! Caleb! Then Caleb was talking to her, um, her best friend. . . The funny one. She’s a blonde. . .” “Jamie?” “Yes! Jamie!”
I thought I was gonna die. But at least I knew she’d really read the book!
Thanks, ladies! I’m having a great time here!
I admit to being firmly in the camp of those who absolutely adored Candle in the Window. But since then, you have had no trouble keeping my undying love and appreciation with all of your other fabulous books. Congratulations and thank you
Christina -
Congratulations on a long and wonderful career, and may it continue for many more years! I *sheepishly* must admit that I haven’t had the opportunity to read your books yet, but after discovering SquawkRadio two days ago, and consequently your website, I’ve been drooling to get my hands on a copy of anything you’ve written! The excerpts on your website are enough to get a girl hooked!
Also thanks for your pearls of wisdom...Lord knows a prospective author can never have enough of those!
Kay
Hi Christina,
Congrats on 15 years of amazing books. I know you said not everyone’s going to love your books, but I always have so you’re never without a fan on any book!!!!
Can’t wait for Scent of Darkness!!!!
Kat
Dear Christina, just think...when everyone else was getting ready for the prom, you were writing CitW! Aren’t you glad you did?
Connie (make that two hundred dollars) Brockway
And I don’t mean to gloat (or smirk) but I have the ARC of SCENT OF DARKNESS in my hot little hands and I’m on Chapter 7 already and absolutely loving it! It’s so passionate and so visceral and so beautifully written. And you guys know how much it pains me to say such glowing things about Xtina, don’t you?
Teresa:
How unfair of you to wave the ARC in our faces. Then to tease about the writing is soooo unfair.
You know, when I finished 15 years at my current job, I stated to others that people get less time in jail for committing murder. Anyhow, I’ve enjoyed my 15 years here, and I’m glad that you’ve enjoyed your 15 years! Here’s to another 15 for you, and another 14 for me!
Thank you all for your congrats! Actually, since the blog was published in 2006, it’s now been 16 years. Yipe.
The forgetting-the-name thing is hugely embarrassing, but it’s sort of a relief to own up to it. I have people ask me if I’m going to write a book about “Thomas” and I think “Who’s Thomas?”
Connie, the check’s in the mail.
So, Teresa ... have you read The Chapter?
Congratulations on 15 plus years published! That is quite an accomplishment and a testiment to the fact you are a fantastic writer.
The small cover of CANDLE IN THE WINDOW is the first cover. The bigger one is the current cover. There was another one in between. The pages are exactly the same in between!
Wow already 15 years. And I loved all of your books, no matter if they are historical or contemporary and now I am looking forward to read your new series. I bet this will be another keeper series.
Christina, congrats on your 16 years! You Rock!! I adored CANDLE IN THE WINDOW--one of my faves. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. As always, you make me smile! I am so excited to read SCENT OF DARKNESS--can’t wait.
Teresa, no fair teasing the rest of us about the ARC of SCENT OF DARKNESS! We’re desperate here.
wow, way to go! 16 years! i wonder if i’m still alive after 16 yrs..LOL
Congrats on 15 pubbed+ years....
Here’s to another 15....and uh more gained wisdom…
And I am excited about scent of darkness....I love Para’s...LOVE! Thank goodness one more of you jumped on that cart! Now...how to get the others over there....lol
Oh, I love your top ten points of wisdom! Very funny!
this is even better the second time around. It’s inspriring, is what it is--besides smart and witty.
And I want to know about THE CHAPTER. You’re talking about the whoopie chapter aren’t you (or at least some hot scene that rivals opera boxes and fairy rings...and what was it in WFG...oh yeah--the watering hole)? Tell us when you get there Teresa and if the randomizer gods are with me....I’ll race you.
I’m cutting, pasting, and taping this to the wall, Christina. And to quote an author I adore:
“We’re walking......”
Christina, Congrats on many (notice I left out the exact number) of being a published author. The world is a better place because of your books! I have just started reading CANDLE IN THE WINDOW, but I am loving it. I have a whole pile of your other books to get to, and am looking forward to SCENT OF DARKNESS also.
Here’s to many more years to look forward to your wonderful books.
--dorothy
Christina, 16 yrs! Congratulations!
I have never read Candle in the window. I started with the governess Brides.
Will look for CitW.
Which book is the 3 armed one?
Congrats on 15 years! I.m looking forward to your new paranormal series.
just posting to see if the pic I uploaded came through.
I missed these blogs the first time around, I’m glad you are rerunning them, they are great.
As far as I can tell, Xtina, EVERY chapter is THE CHAPTER! But if you mean that one where he...and then she...and then they...and then I got really warm and had to turn up the air conditioning.
Is that the one?
I am that 10th one. I do not want to write a book! I wouldn’t have time to read all those I want to read if I wrote.
Besides it seems to be a prerequisite for an author to eat chocolate and I am allergic to the stuff. LOL
Congratulations on the 15th , Cristina and have many, many more
Christina - Congrats on hanging in there for 15 years and entertaining us with your stories. I just finished Once Upon a Pillow that you and Connie authored together and just loved it!!! How about a Squawker anthology along the same lines? It would be great! Congrats to all the Squawkers.
I have the same affliction with names that you and Eloisa seem to have....I keep telling my kids that as I get older I have so many inconsequential things to remember that some things just have to go to make room in that little file cabinet.....
I just read a biography by the football player, Steve McMichaels. Men are always telling him that they could have played professional football, but for.....
My husband does construction. Every homeowner assumes the construction will go much faster then it does. They do not understand the work involved.
My husband for years thought that I had th easiest job in the world. I got to wear suits and sit at desk. Finally, he realized that being involved in a contested custody suit or defending a man accused of rape might be stressful. BEG.
Everyone underestimates the effort that goes into someone else’s job.
What is important about wannabe writers is not whether they understand the labor that goes into writing a novel. There are so many wannabe writers because storytelling is such an important part of the human condition. There is a human need to hear stories (Show me a kid or adult who doesn’t love a good story.) and there is a human need to tell stories.
Funny and informational blog as always. Congratulations for 16 years and here’s hoping for another 16!
Oh, thanks a lot, Xtina. Now I have “Make New Friends But Keep the Old” stuck in my head.
And how come Terri got an ARC and I didn’t? Huh? Huh? That’s SO not fair. Mo-om! Terri got Xtina’s ARC and I didn’t!
And interestingly, I had my annual pelvic this morning (I know--TMI), and guess what? My OB-GYN is--you guessed it--writing a book. There’s nothing like lying with your feet in the stirrups listening to someone tell you aaaaaaallllll about their book. Nossir.
Great blog. I have the “Candle in the Window” cover that’s in the middle of those 2 posted. I always love your books! They are automatic buys for me. And I can’t wait for “Scent of Darkness” to come out. It sounds like an excellent summer read.
Congrats on 16 published years, Christina!! You look mahvelous, dahling (and the books ain’t too shabby, either!)!!!
BTW, colinfirthfan, Castles in the Air is the one with the 3-armed lady on the cover. I was lucky enough to get my hands on two copies, one in pristine condition and one that looks like it has been read over and over and over and over and over and over and over ad infinitum (although the cover art is still okay).
LOL I’m one of those 1 out of 10 that doesn’t expect to ever write a book or wants to put all that hard work into trying - I just love reading after you guys have done all the hard work. I think authors have to have a good sense of humor obviously
LOL, Liz! Can’t imagine what fun that was listening to your doc’s book info. You were definitely a “captive” audience.
But Liz, it’s only fair that I got the ARC! You’ve been hoarding the most adorable little boy on the planet for 13 years now and you won’t give him to me! You’ve left me no choice but to push you down the escalator at the next conference and take him.
Christina I really liked your Knight series books and have been hooked since. Congrats on the 16 years of being published. I know we will have many more
years to look forward to your great books.
I don’t particularly want to write a book. I get my enjoyment out of reading. Life is
hard and I need my escapisms. You wonderful writer’s give that to the readers.
I want to thank you all for keeping us entertained
Man, ever since I told Terri we named her and her hubby our son’s guardians in our will, I’ve had to watch my back. Note to self: Change will at earliest convenience to ensure son is raised by wolves…
Oh, Liz. Oh, Liz. You win the Holy Sh*it Award for the day.
And Teresa got an arc because she bribed me, of course. Dark chocolate M&Ms forever! I am WIDE OPEN for bribery. For starters, you could send Connie that $200 she demanded. Because, um, between you and me, it’s not really in the mail.
Thank you to everyone who doesn’t want to write a book, and to everyone who does—stop reading the blog and go back to work!!!
I promise when I put up the winner at an unspecified hour today, I will also post the Three-Armed Cover.
New blog coming up soon!
Lady, you rock! I must be in a mood because your last point get me all teary. J Perry told me to pop over and get the fire in my belly. It’s there! I’m getting closer and closer to finishing and holding my WIP closer and closer to me. Who knew it would take so long to write a book, strip down beyond recognition, toss it in the shredder, grab it back out and fall in love with it all over again. It’s worse than a man for Pete’s sake!
Loved this post when I first read it. As soon as I hang up my Deli Diva hat today, I’m off to my writing space.
Congratulations on your 16 years
Must be a sweet 16!
Fifteen plus years......you go girl!!!!!!!!
Congrats on the 15 years as an author! I loved your words of wisdom.
Congratulations on your 15 years Christina!!
I’m sure your new paranormal series will be a great success too!
Congrats on the wonerful 15 years of great books. Love your blog and all the best.
Congrats on the 15 years and please keep writing because we want to keep reading! All of you squawkers realize you’d have to write at least one book a month to keep us all happy? Not that we’re greedy and demanding or anything.
BTW, I have stashes of dark chocolate m&ms from Star Wars and Christmas. I’m sure all that dark chocolate isn’t good for kids so of course I can’t share.
Congrats on the 16 years.
I really dislike writing, but I’m a champion reader.
~Prudence making note: Christinia has published 29 books.....must fine the 9 I haven’t read yet~
I must have the middle cover.
On the left is the arm of a knight in armor holding a sword and on the right is a window with 3 candles in the candelabra.
Yep, Tina, that’s the middle cover.
Prudence, This blog was originally published last year, so I’m up to 32 books now. Get busy, woman!
Christina,
I was at my local Fred Meyer’s last Saturday and was excited to see 7 different titles of your books . I bought “Rules of Attraction”; Rules of Engagement”; and “Rules of Surrender.” I have to check them out so I can see which one to read first.
Congratulations on your 15 years of writing, and here’s to many more!!
Ok Ms Dodd, I have purchased, IN MY WILDEST DREAMS; LOST IN YOUR ARMS; MY FAVORITE BRIDE; along with 11 other books. AND, my co-workers purchased SUGAR DADDY for my convelesence over the next 6 weeks. That should keep me busy for a few weeks......I hope.
(would have been nice to have SCENT OF DARKNESS.)
Linda,
Those are three very excellent books!
Thanks Prudence for mentioning the books you did; I will have to look for them.
You take care, and I hope you are up and about quickly!
Your welcome Linda.
And thanks, I do plan on being up and around very quickly, I live at the beach and I plan on being very tan by the time I go back to work. (Gotta make the most of every situation)
linda said..."I bought “Rules of Attraction”; Rules of Engagement”; and “Rules of Surrender.” I have to check them out so I can see which one to read first.”
There’s a printable list on my website with all my series in order. Go here http://christinadodd.com/books.php and click the link at the top and you’ll get it as a pdf file.
Prudence, you had my complete sympathy right up to the point when you mentioned living on the beach and getting a tan. I’m freezing my fanny up here in WA, and I am so envious! Well, except for the surgery part ... get well soon!
Prudence, If you need someone to read to you while you are recovering and getting that tan (great plan, that) I’d be more than happy to be your reader....really. You should hear my infliction...it’s spot on!
I’m definitely someone who leaves creative writing to those like you who are great at it. No stories at all in my head other than those that have been written already.
I finally read the Prescott Family Chronicles. Great job and wonderful characters, especially Cruz. See, I can’t remember names any more either.
As for the three-armed woman: I didn’t notice the third one at all maybe because I could never have my arm up there where the hero is holding the hand. What an awkward position.
Keep them coming and I, along with lots of other people will read them.
Thanks for hours and days of entertainment. Congratulations on the 16+ years in publishing and the second anniversary of Squawk Radio.
I really loved your post and all your points of wisdom. And congratulations on your 15 years as an author! That’s a great testiment to the fact that you are one wonderful author and everyone has realized this. I’m looking forward to Scent of Darkness. Loved the excerpt!
