Christina Dodd says I’M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP, MR. DEMILLE
67 Comments
I’ve watched all the interviews, including that Nora lady - I’ve never read any of her books but my sister seems to like her work.
Here’s my two cents...I thoroughly enjoyed watching you and Eloisa. Romance Novel.TV is now one of my daily site checks.
Did you ever see a picture of someone and then be surprised by how their voice sounds? Or have a picture in your mind of how someones husband looks? Considering the delicious books you write, I thought your voice would be sultry and sexy.Heck, you’re just a normal sounding woman. And I thought you would have a regional accent from living in Texas. Maybe I’m just weird
Can’t wait to see the rest of the chicks interviewed.
I watched and registered the first day, squealing Squawker fangirl that I am. What a cool concept! You all looked beautiful and sounded smart. Now I have one more place to visit to keep me from the WIP That Will Never End.
My code is outside38. If only. It’s 8 degrees and there’s still snow on my car. Brr. Expletive deleted indeed.
What great interveiws, you ladies looked wonderful. I have to say that my favorite part was when Christina confessed that her inspiration came from looking at a Harlequin Presents and thinking that the heroine was too whiny. I do that all of the time. I have several books that I have read and thought, That’s not how I would do it. So it’s nice to read that a best selling author like Christina does the same thing, makes me feel better about my doing it.
And Ritter was too adorable!!
Christina,
I couldn’t get your part 2 interview to play! So I had to go back and watch Eloisa’s interview again. I absolutely love it when she says, “I don’t have to be a Princess, but I wouldn’t say no.” That is such a good sentiment to live by.
And do you think Mary Jo Putney really writes sitting in her recliner?
Christina, you look fabulous! And Ritter is too darling for words.
I love your laptop! Holy cow that’s a nice one. And that view!!! Sheesh.
Great interview. I really enjoyed the part about your husband supporting you. What a prince.
BTW that bridge/walk path is beautiful! I’m so jealous.
First, congrats on the NY times list! Not surprising, though!
-It’s a little like watching “the making of Star Wars” you mean, the death star was only a model? (yes, I live in a fantasy world, sometimes)..like Ann said, ‘wow, you are just a normal sounding woman!”
Loved it and Eloisa’s.. nice digs, too, lady!
- A friend of mine’s art studio was photographed for an interior magazine, and she laughed at the many bins of art supplies/stuff they carted out BEFORE they even shot one photo! She said “with all my crap gone, how would I work?” Funny, I thought!
I’ve definitely tried books after seeing an author interviewed. I find that if the author is interesting and subtley humorous or witty, her books tend to be that way. And you and Eloisa are definitely proof of that.
Great house and view, by the way, with cute dogs! I also liked seeing Eloisa’s husband. It’s always nice to see a writer’s inspiration!
I finished TIC yesterday - procastinating work, as usual. But I enjoyed the book so it is was worth it! I’m looking forward to the next brother’s story.
I am thoroughly enjoying romancenovel.tv! I loved seeing the interviews. It’s wonderful to see places and people and pets you mention on the blog. Ritter is sooo adorable.
Would the interviews lead me to buy books/read books that I hadn’t been planning on? Yep. For example. I read one half of one book by that Nora chick and gave it away and never touched anything else. I watched her interviews and, more persuasively, the clip about the movie version of Fallen Angel (I think) and now I think I should maybe try again.
Same with Mary Jo Putney- even though I know she’s an excellent writer - I hadn’t connected well when I tried reading her books. Now I want to try again, since I have heard her talk.
I think I’d like to see anyone interviewed that you’ve had as guest bloggers - Susan Mallery, SEP, Karen Hawkins . . .
Here’s my question: How will Romance Novel TV pay for itself? Is it a pay to play in that authors pay to participate? Makes sense from the publicity standpoint. I just wondered.
Lynn
I watched Eloisa’s interviews a few weeks ago which I loved. (Christina, I can’t watch yours right now because I’m at work but I look forward to watching them over the weekend.)
Ann in IL said…
“Did you ever see a picture of someone and then be surprised by how their voice sounds?”
I’ve done that before too! My imagined voice was almost right for one person and was way off for the other. In my line of work it is usually the other way around...I hear their voice and then get to see what the person looks like. I’m almost never right with the imagined faces.
I just happened across the interview the day before I read your blog. It was great. I was impressed by how professional and personal the interview was and… of course, the fantastic view outside your windows made me very jealous. Congrats on a great interview.
This is an excellent new website. I loved it. I liked the sisters banter with each other. The interviews were wonderful. As a reader/fan and being a visual person it’s great to see an interviews with authors and getting to know a little bit more about them.
I am so enjoying this new site. I was lucky enough to meet Maria when they filmed Eloisa at the booksigning in Dec. (yes I’m in that video and oh if I had only known there would be cameras there!) and she was so sweet.
As a former DJ I can promise you people rarely look like they sound. You don’t know how often I would get the reaction “Oh, that’s YOU?” Yep, that deep, sexy voice comes out of this lump. Ha!
I so want to see a girl talk segment with the squawkers. That would be so great and so hysterical. I just know it!
I’d pick up a book from an author I saw interviewed. But since my TBR pile is well over 50ish, it just might take me a while to get to it.
And I forgot to mention the dogs are adorable and I also have total house/view envy. That parking lot view from the tiny balcony of my little third floor apartment just doesn’t hold up.....
Both Christina and Eloisa were a total blast to interview. They were funny and REALLY charming in person - they made my job easy.
And Mary Jo actually writes in her recliner - we didn’t stage it.
Christina seems to write where the mood hits her - she’s got lots of great places in her house to write - but when we show you her office - it’s to die for - we were glad the carpenter finished the shelves.
And Eloisa writes in her office.
Lynn,
I was wondering the same thing about romancenovel.tv - how will it be sustainable given its lack of banner ads and other webvertisments. (Not to say I want to see those ads, mind you.)
I was just curious to know how they will be able to keep the site up and running because it is now one of my daily “must-go-to” sites along with AAR, Squawkers, Word Wenches and now Goddesses.
- Beth
PS - I’m heading to Bellingham, WA in the summer to visit my sister. I’ll make a point of taking a walk over the hallowed ground where Christina walked with the pooches.
note to self: Sound sultry next time.
Julie, who are these authors you mention? Lisa? Teresa? Connie? Liz? I’m not familiar with their names. We film stars don’t mingle with the hoi polloi.
Lynn, the book I LOVED by that Nora person is THE THREE FATES. Give that one a shot.
Terrio, Maria told me they’re planning a Squawk segment. I don’t know if there’ll be a celebrity death match between Lisa and Terea, but I did suggest it.
Beth, the spot where I walked the dogs is very short—up and down, up and down. But the park is gorgeous!
Christina - my first question, is Ritter on quaaludes? I have never seen a lab that calm! He is adorable. If it wasn’t for the shedding I’d get another one today (mine’s been gone 3 years)! I love their personalities - I’m considering a labradoodle! Okay, enough about the dog!
The site is great and I love the interviews. I think I would read a book based on an interview if I thought the author struck a cord with me. I also second the motion for all the Squawkers interviewed together. Talk about a logistics project - make it in Maui (neutral location!)
Your house and the view is gorgeous. When I first saw the interview before I read your blog I thought the path you were walking on with Maria was in your back yard!!
Hey Christina - we are absolutely planning a Squawk segment - we are only waiting for one squawker to reply and then we are good to go!
Terrio - I was a DJ too! Those first-sight reactions are a hoot sometimes, aren’t they!
The best reaction I ever got was “You look younger than you sound.”
Christina - my first question, is Ritter on quaaludes?
No, honest. He was hell-puppy, and at about six months he just mellowed out. He still has greeting issues—when he meets you, he’s never met anyone he adores more which he demonstrates by leaping around like an idiot—but the dogs that are bred to be assistance dogs tend to be incredibly sweet and totally beta.
Your dog is adorable. Yes, watching authors get interviewed does make me go out and read their books. Also after I finish a book I try to look up every interview (audio or otherwise) that I can. Especially when it’s a book group read! Then I post all of the info I can find on the group site.
Ritter is the perfect dog - I wanted to take him home. Of course that’s easy for me to say, Christina did all the hard work raising him.
And now it’s official, ALL the Squawkers will appear on Romance Novel TV - Oh happy day for all of us fans!
Pt.1… (am slightly over my character limit!)
I’ve already gushed on the message boards over on the romancenoveltv site, but hey, I can gush here too.
I love the concept of romancenoveltv. I think it’s brilliant. The thing that strikes me about it is that immediacy of seeing and hearing your fave authors talking about their work, and how it creates a stronger bond between the author and her readers. I would absolutely pick up a book by an author who might be ‘new to me’ based on hearing/seeing her speak in an interview. If I think she’s interesting as a person, then I imagine I’d be quite likely to think her work might be interesting, too…
Pt.2…
Authors I’d like to see? I asked for Lisa and lo, she has been snagged. Can’t wait for that! I’d also love to see Kathryn Smith interviewed. Especially since she just made USA Today for the first time-- so well-deserved!
Just wanted to say great job on the interviews all around. Eloisa seems so nice she could be everyone’s best friend. And Connie, I have not just house-and-dog but life-envy!
And to Maria and Marisa, I should be upset with both of you as you’ve made me into a junkie already-- I keep checking back every ten minutes to see if new interviews are being put up!
I think I must have a real life somewhere, but I can’t remember where I put it…
Oh Rhonda - I never got that reaction. But I would get guys calling and offering their cell numbers all the time. I never took them. Why crush their fantasy?
I already posted this over on the romancenovel.tv board but I’d so love to see an interview with Judith McNaught. She was the author that got me through those horrible HS years when all I wanted was to be anywhere and anyone else.
And I’m voting for adding a mud pit to the squawkers girl talk. I’d put my money on Lisa. It’s the nice quiet ones you have to watch out for.....
Chickie - a romance novel junkie is my kind of gal.
We’re glad you’re a fan of the network - we’re eating it up over here!
Huh, I thought that was your bridge you were thoughtfully walking down. Then I remembered you saying your yard looks like Mordor. Maybe if they interviewed you outside, you could have gotten the landscapers to finish!
I love that site. All the interviews were great...but your interview was the best, of course!
Can’t wait for more interviews and am so excited that the Squawkers are going to be interviewed. How fun!
I love your dog!
Will se the interviews anon. See where my interests lay!
My word is like59 and yes I’d like to be 59 again at least in body! LOL
I thought that stone bridge crossed the moat to your castle!
Seriously, you have lovely home and thanks for opening it up to us. And you looked great too.
I’m really liking this romance novel tv.
WOOHOO! Christina, you look DIVINE! And whadda house!
But what I liked best was the LIBRARY. Oh my gosh. I’ve always wanted a library. One day ...
Terrific interview. You did the genre proud!!!
The missing Squawker was me. I confess. Put it down to e-mail problems and a moody ISP. But Maria and I have indeed connected and I, too, will be included, Julie. (Thanks, Maria! *G*)
And forget the celebrity death match between Terri and Lisa. I want to see the House Wars. Who’s the best decorator? Let the games begin.
As for pets, my interview will doubtless be performed with our new kitten sitting on my shoulders, batting at my hair, since she seems to have become a permanent accessory…
I concur with what Chickie said (both parts 1 & 2).
And for me, it’s not just hearing you talk in an interview, it’s the interaction we have with all of you here. (Liz’s kind words got me diving into her books.)
Your squawk bantering, your compassion and wit all make you very real, just like us regular people. (Almost, I’ll never be a NYT Bestselling Author.) I imagine you tap your pencil, get frustrated, and hit the backspace key more often than any other.
What’s your feeling when you finish a chapter (or book) and know in your gut you got it right? Relief? Elation?
I watched all the interviews. Can’t wait for the one with all 6 of you.
I loved it.
I can’t wait to see more interviews. And it does make me want to try an author’s work when I hear them talk about what they were trying to do with a particular book or series.
When I first heard about romancenovel.tv I admit was hoping for movies made from romance novels-- but done the right way (not like Julie Garwood’s For The Roses that was made into absolute dreck with the romance taken out completely).
What a nice thing to say, Prudence. Thank you.
You don’t mingle with the Hoi-Polloi, Christina? Oh, that’s right. Hoi-Polloi is French for “People classier than me,” isn’t it?
It is hard to infuse sultry into a Minnesota accent but I’m planning on doing it!
One of my dogs is a perfect gentleman and the other is a perfect idiot. I am havng my carpet cleaned next week.
I am also on a 300 calorie a day diet. When that ends (probably around nonn today) my back-up plan is to head to Army Surplus and get a camo tarp with which to make a Minnesota mu-muu, and then sit in a bunch of weeds in the backyard (aka prairie grass) so that my figure disappears into the background and I look like a disembodied head during the interview.
Christina and ELoisa just set the frickin’ bar TOO DAMN HIGH! And trhen there will be Lisa, and Liz, and Terri…
Maria, how about if we interview me at night, in a closet. I’ll hold a flashlight under my chin…
I loved watching the videos of you and Eloisa! You both looked gorgeous--and were just articulate, funny, and wonderful to meet!
This is the coolest new website!
Connie - we could try an interview in the closet with a flashlight - but the cameraman would kill me and we don’t have close caption.
As for shooting outdoors in Minnesota in March, I don’t think I have enough sweaters. But if you get that mu-mu, can I borrow it later?
This was so wonderful! I was excited to finally see what you are like when you talk, Christina! To me it was worth the pain you went through to see these great interviews! heh heh Btw, you are gorgeous and I don’t believe it had anything to do with the makeup. I love your dog and that little piece on how he is sitting next to you… so cute! I did go “awww”
What surprised me is seeing Eloisa! She is such a sweetheart! I don’t know why that surprised me. I think I somehow imagined her as this tough professor and maybe even a little dry. And Eloisa, you are thin. What do you mean you wish you were thin? Also, you and your hubby make such a handsome couple. An Italian Knight...hmmm.
Thanks to both of you for doing these interviews. So much of my curiosity has now been satisfied. :-D!!!
Connie, here’s another back up plan...Get them to use a chroma-key, a/k/a the green screen or the blue screen that they use to put a weatherman infront of a map. Your head could be superimposed on any kind of body you’d like *g*
Honestly, though, I don’t think you’ll have anything to worry about. All the Squawkers/Squawkees are fabulous as is.
I can’t wait to see all the Squawkers together in one interview! COOL!
Christina, I loved your interview. I don’t know how you ever get any work done with that view out your window. It is simply spectacular. Your house is gorgeous and you looked wonderful. Ritter is just too adorable for words and Lizzie looks like a sweetheart as well.
Hearing that all 6 of the Squakers will be interviewed is such a boon. I can’t wait.
--dorothy
Don’t let Xtina convince you that Ritter is her dog! When I visited he begged me to let him come back to Kentucky with me but Xtina refused.
He’s still pining for those tender nights we shared with his chin on my house slippers. Be strong, big fellow! Wait for me! Stay alive! Survive! No matter what happens I will come back for you!!!
I wanted more to interviews. Where are the out-takes?
And Christina, we need more pictures of the finished rooms in your house. I’m dying to see that finished office of yours.
I’d, of course, like to see all the Squawkers interviewed...but what I really LOVE to see is an interview with all the Squawkers TOGETHER. Because what’s so great about this site (other than the six brilliant women who head it), is the interaction between them all. We get to be a part of that, but that’s the glue...their friendship.
Christina, your hair is killer. It’s about as spicy as your sex scenes.
Love the site and I think it is a wonderful idea all the way around. One thing I would like to see is a schedule of where you are going to be. Not that I want to be on it again, once was enough, but it was really interesting to watch you work. Some authors are also better than others about posting their scheduled appearances. It would be great to know where you will be filming our favorite authors during their public appearances so we could stop by and do the whole groupie thing.
J Perry, what a great idea! The outtakes would be a fabulous addition! You ought to go to the site and suggest that.
I Blew through Tongue in Chic and it was soooo goood!!!
“How do you find an agent?
Wet t-shirt contest “
damn. I’ve been doin it wrong this entire time… lol
I just read Teresa’s post and suddenly heard ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from Titanic and pictured that poor pooch holding onto some floating piece of wood in the ocean.
I love romancenovel.tv--I’ve added it to my favorites. Christina, you and Eloisa looked beautiful! Your Ritter is an absolute doll. Love your house and the view, too.
I finished Tongue in Chic on Monday and loved it! Can’t wait for your next book.
J. Perry, you’re spot on. An interview with all of the Squawkers would be fab!
Christina, that was a great interview. I just wish I had a faster internet connection so I could watch it without breaks in the dialogue.
Your doggy is adorable, by the way. Oh, and it’s my first time hearing your voice and somehow, I imagined you with a different voice! Don’t ask me why, I don’t know…
You did start me thinking about reading both TIHH and TIC. I remember going to the store and quickly reading the back cover of TIHH and for some reason, it didn’t grab me, but you just gave me the kick in the behind to go out there and purchase those two.
Now about the 3 previous ones that were mentionned in the interview, are they related to these newer ones? I always want to read books in series in order…
Hope you make your deadline with all these recent interruptions, it must take a lot of your time away from writting to not only grant interviews, but to chat with us chickies!
Christina, you were marvelous! And definitely Eloisa, too! I’m so excited about this new site!
And to answer your other questions, yes your puppy is absolutely adorable (but don’t tell my own heathen I said so
)!
And after seeing how classy the interviews are on the site, even if I wasn’t familiar with the authors in the interviews, I totally would buy books by the authors interviewed.
Smiles,
LdyB
I need to know something!
Does Ded Bob know he was mentioned in TIC?
“Look into my eye sockets!” “I’ve been bobmitized!”
My stupid old dial up computer, I wasn’t able to get it. But yes your dog is adorable
I really enjoyed your interview Christina; you looked great and the view behind you was so beautiful. I would sit there every morning with my coffee looking out. I too am excited about “Romance Novel.TV.” It is great to be able to see and hear a favorite author discuss her books. Besides the squawkers I would like to hear from Julia Quinn; Samantha James, and Mary Balogh.
The only downside is finding the time to view these sites and be able to read too! I might have to go part-time at work or give up cleaning or cooking!
I say give up the cleaning and cooking, Linda. I did that when I was trying to get published ... it’s getting messy around here.
Thanks, you all, for the kind words about TIC and the interviews. Filming and writing books seem to be approximately the same process—sort of this random putting together of words that you hope comes out well, and weeks or months later, there it is, and you’re naked for the world to see. And critique.
And Teresa, the other day Ritter was tossing his fluffy blonde head and saying, “Remember that lady who visited? The one who insisted I sleep on her slippers? What a ditz she was!” Pause. “Did I hear someone drop a crumb of cheese on the floor?” Then he ran off and returned only to place his head adoringly in my lap, where he dozed off.
Sarah ... did I mention Ded Bob in TONGUE IN CHIC? You’d think I’d remember that, wouldn’t you? Did you email him and tell him?
Froggie, the Lost Texas Hearts are their own series, I just had a character who didn’t have his own romance and to say people were cranky was an understatement. So Gabriel is in TIC as a minor character and is going on to greater things.
That was a great interview Christina. I love TIC, I read it in about two days, between audits. Ritter was adorable as usual, even when he was in training and you guys brought him to the book signings he always seemed calm and relaxed. I liked the spikes in your hair. When I went to school at WWU I would ride my bike up to Watcom falls it’s beautiful there.
Add my praise to the raves about romancenovel.tv. It is a terrific place, Christina and Eloisa were both wonderful, and since I am also an MJP and Nora fan, I was thrilled with all the videos. And Christina’s house is gorgeous!
Congrats on the bestseller status, Christina. I bought my copy of TIC as soon as it hot the shelves (I started to edit this typo, but it is probably a Freudian slip, so I left it. LOL) and read it immediately. Now how long are we going to have to wait for the rest of the Fortune brothers since the paranormals will be your next releases?
(she said impatiently).
Love the typo, Janga! LOL! Book #3 of the Fortune Hunters is out next February. I know ... booooo!
Debbie O, the book isn’t done yet. I’ve changed the title to I’LL SLEEP WHEN I DIE.
I was on another website and there were recommendations to read Eloisa, Connie, Teresa and Elizabeth
so I’ll just ignore the other two will I?
No, no...you can read them AFTER you’re done with all our books and our backlists.
page 271 - Ded Bob and the Fantastic Juggling Oxenberries are mentioned.
Unfortunately… the jugglers aren’t listed anywhere google can find!
Bob has been informed.
Christina, you looked beautiful, and came across just like you do here - smart, funny, warm and talented. And I ditto what everyone else said about your house and view - wow!
And Eloisa came across the same way - all those lovely adjectives! Eloisa, your husband is very charming. You make a cute couple. And I thought it was sweet that you made it clear you wanted him to be your hero in Regency times too. One thing I’ve always liked about the Squawkers is how clearly happy they are with their husbands - not presenting them as perfect, but as partners in real-life HEAs.
I enjoyed the interviews with MJP and NR too; I’ve been a fan of both of them for a long time. It’s such a pleasure to connect with authors I admire as fully-realized people - appearance, voice, humor and world view. It makes me an even bigger fan of your work than I was already. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the rest of the Squawkers’ interviews!
Ohhhh, now I remember where Ded Bob is! And I made up the jugglers.
Connie—bite me.
Thank you, Susanna, when I’m finishing a book I do literally run out of words, and I was so afraid I’d be talking and suddenly everything would dry up and there I’d be, moving my mouth and hoping everyone would think it was a problem with the sound.
And did you see the ad for my website? I had to do that thing five times!
Yes Christina, the interviews made me want to buy the books for every single author featured. It’s wonderful to see the personality behind the book. It connects the reader in a way that the blurb on the back of the book just can’t.
so Connie to do your comment in regards to mine that would make
Connie 16 novels, 4 novellas.
Eloisa 11 novels, 2 novellas
Terri 17 novels
Liz 54 novels, 8 novellas.
Christina 32 novels, 6 novellas.
Lisa 27 novels, 4 novellas.
nah!
Hi everybody!
I’m so happy you all liked my interview. The truth is that I haven’t seen it—I feel more than faintly queasy when I watch myself. If they put up that part when my husband says that I CALLED HIM when we were dating—it’s a LIE!!
That’s all I have to say about it…
Eloisa
Bravo, Christina, you don’t look nervous at all in the interview and what a gorgeous view you have from your house! I’m going to bookmark romance.tv and check back often. The interview is an awesome way for us to get to know the authors better. I’m so pleased to hear they will be interviewing Lisa Kleypas and Tersa Medeiros too.
Christina, you were fantastic! And so was Eloisa of course! I was absolutely thrilled when Maria announced on the message board that Lisa is going to be interviewed and that Connie and Teresa will also be making appearances - I hope Liz will be interviewed in the near future too.
