Ooooh, we saw this not long ago and it was WONDERFUL! I can’t remember enjoying a movie this much since the golden days of cinema in the 70s. In fact, it has a lot in common with that era of film. The ending, as you said, is absolutely terrific, and the acting is amazing. The whole message of the film is lovely, and I can’t wait ‘til it comes out on DVD, because I want to share it with my son when he’s in the throes of teen angst.  Great, great movie.

This is a funny topic for me this week; you should get a good laugh out of it, Liz.  To give you a little background info: My BIL and I are big music and movie buffs. Whenever, my sister, BIL, husband, and I take a boat or road trip, the BIL and I have a “name that musician contest”. We scan through radio stations to see who can name the artist of the song that is playing the quickest. My husband and sister just roll their eyes at us and complain about “hey, we were listening to that song”. We exchange CD’s when we think we have found a really good CD, etc.  We recommend movies to one another to rent when they come out. Both our husbands are those “I’ll wait ‘til they come out on DVD and I can sit on my couch and eat my popcorn and pause the movie so I can go to the bathroom when I want to “kind of guys”. (Exciting, huh) Whew… anyhow to make a long story short… I cannot for the life of me at this moment remember which movie it was, but whatever it was, I thought it was awesome and I told him he just had to rent it. He did and he told me that he thought it was the most horrible piece of SH*T he had ever seen and could not imagine why anyone would waste their time watching it when they could spend their time doing better things like “mowing the yard” or “pulling weeds” (being sarcastic).  Ever since then, he will ask me if I have seen any good movies lately, and he will take a step back and give me this look like “now are you sure this is going to be a good movie?” so I really have to think about the movie and analyze it to death to try to determine what kinds of movies he likes and if I think he is going to like this movie or not, etc.  It’s really kind of funny.  Before that, I would never have given it a second thought.  If I thought the movie was great, I would have told him so.  The part you will like Liz… I get a call from my sister a couple of nights ago.  I had given the BIL a copy of a CD and my sister called to tell me that the BIL wanted me to know that it was the best CD he had ever heard in his entire life and that he had listened to it over and over and over again.... the name of the CD?<BR><BR>"Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison"<BR><BR>The movie sounds really good Connie.  As a squawker, I trust your judgment and will have to check it out (when it comes out on DVD)

P.S.  <BR><BR>Sorry for the long post.  I never could make anything concise.  My teachers always hated grading my essay questions.  I always got good grades on them though smile Maybe they were too tired to read the whole thing!

Thanks for the recommendation, Connie!  I loved The Royal Tannenbaums, although Rushmore is nearest and dearest to me among Wes Anderson’s films.  Steve Carrell has been wow-ing me all season in The Office, so I’d be interested to see the movie for his character alone.  I didn’t think that anyone could top Ricky Gervais in the original UK version of The Office, but Carrel has brilliantly reinvented the role.

I will probably see it on DVD.  But I went and saw the Royal Tennaumbaums in the theatre (die hard Owen fan that I am) and almost asked for my money back.  I would have if I wasn’t berating myself for my stupidity for picking a movie solely because Owen was in it--and ignoring the “plot” altogether.<BR><BR>My friend Holly, who has a higher-brow quality for humor and movie plots--is dying to see Little Miss Sunshine.  Once burned, twice shy, I say...she thought The 40 Yr Old Virgin was hysterical--I, uh, did not.  <BR><BR>However, on the quirky, feel-good movie line, Daltry Calhoun is good.  It’s produced by Quentin Terentino (who I think looks and had the same fidgity habits of a serial killer) but I loved it all the same.  If Little Miss Sunshine is as good as Daltry...I shall look forward to seeing it.  On DVD.

Ladies, I just got this via email and had to share… a little humor to kick off your Labor Day Weekend.  Thought you writers out there might appreciate it.<BR><BR> A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me at 5:00 AM “. He knew she would find it. <BR>The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight.  Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, <BR>"It is 5:00AM. Wake up.” <BR><BR>Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests. God may have created man before woman, but there is always a rough draft before the masterpiece.

My daughter went to see it—loved it—and she said her favorite line was when the little girl asked her grandfather if she was pretty, and he said, “Of course you’re pretty! I’m crazy about you, and it’s not for your personality or intelligence.”

Your rec of Tennanbaums alone (love that movie) would have propelled to the theater for Sunshine, but I’ve been waiting for Sunshine ever since my mom--my mom blessed with impeccable movie taste...Fanny and Alexander, anyone?--said it was a must not miss. Presently, I’m waiting for a babysitter who doesn’t have band practice 6 nights a week. <BR><BR>It just doesn’t surprise me, Connie--you with your fabulous sense of weird and heart-touching.

I think that Greg Kinnear is such a great actor - I’ve loved him since Sabrina, and I still think that he should have won the Oscar for As Good As It Gets.  This movie looks really good!  One movie that can always make me laugh especially when I’m down in the dumps is: Waiting for Guffman.

I’ve been a Gre Kinnear fan since E Talk Soup.  DH and I would watch that every chance we got when he was on it.  After he left it just wasn’t the same.  Loved him in Sabrina and As Good As It Gets, too.  I’ll have to check this one out.

Elyssany..I loved Greg Kinnear in “As Good as It Gets”! He looks really good as a blonde. (I am also a big fan of Helen Hunt, of course DH thinks she is a hotty, go figure, and you can’t go wrong with Jack Nicholson.) Greg Kinnear is also in the new DVD release “The Matador” with Pierce Brosnan. I didn’t get to see all of it yet. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting of Pierce though. The scene where he walks through the lobby in those cowboy boots had me rolling on the floor.

Connie, if it makes you feel any better, I love The Royal Tannenbaums.  Did you know Owen Wilson co-wrote that script?  Can’t wait to see Sunshine.

I saw it last night with a couple of friends. Totally loved it. I loved Steve Carell. I loved Toni Collette. The whole cast was good. The opening scene, with Olive watching a pageant, wanting to be like that? The yearning in that nearly made me cry. And it just got better from there. I have to say, the girl who played Olive-is her name Abigail Breslin?-was really good. She wasn’t cutesy. She felt like a real kid to me. <BR><BR>Now I want to see The Illusionist.

Oooh, Lareign, “The Illusionist” looks really good and I thought “Scoop” looked really good too.  Of course, Hugh Jackman plays in it, need I say more.  Those darn squawkers are brain-washing me.  You will fall in love with Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman is the best, Hugh Jackman.... Hugh Jackman....
