ELOISA IN PRAISE OF SIMPLE FOLK

Sounds great..I’ll give it a try
Thanks, Eloisa
Where in MN did you grow up? I’m still living in the small MN town I was born in, and my husband is a DJ on the local radio station, which plays rock and talk shows.
"Across the Great Divide” reminds me of a Nanci Griffith album, Other Voices, Other Rooms, which has the song on it. I think you’d really enjoy it too. She sings songs by the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Tom Paxton and Janice Ian, to name a few.
Christina, there was a time you could go down to Anderson Fair, here in Houston, and hear Nanci Griffith for the price of a couple of drinks.
Here is the address for the website of the late Kate Wolf. It is still run by her family.

Pat--I grew up in Madison, MN, population (at that point) 2,242. It was near Dawson. Are you anywhere around there?
Eloisa
Gram,
Thank you for pointing out that website! Not only did I discover that I’m missing some of her work, I read her bio. What a fascinating person! I’m so sorry she died of leukemia so young.
Eloisa
The folk and folk-rock music of the 60s and 70s is part of the soundtrack of my life, but I only discovered Kate Wolf in 1998 when Treasures Left Behind, a tribute album was released. The album’s attraction for me initially was that a number of my favorite performers --Kathy Mattea, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, and Lucinda Williams--participated, but I fell in love with Wolf’s lyrics, particularly “Give Yourself to Love,” one of the most beautiful songs I know.
Eloisa, what beautiful, sad lyrics. I’m going to run over to amazon to buy the CD!
Janelle
P.S. Have you started the new book with JQ and ? yet?
Oh, Janelle, I love that you made your avatar a picture of the triplets. What sweethearts they are!
I second Janga’s comment about your triplets!!
Eloisa
Funny, you sound like Liz but you don’t look like her!
I discovered folk music in the mid-80s (yes, late to the party) and have been in love ever since. We are very fortunate to live near Pete Seeger, one of the icons of folk music. What a treasure! I’m also very excited because my kids get to sing with him at a benefit this Spring.
I got to see Richie Havens at BAM in Brooklyn and was floored.
I am sure I have enjoyed Kate Wolf’s music and look forward to hearing more.
Your kids are singing with Peter Seeger? WOW, Santa—that’s huge. What kind of event is it?
Eloisa
WOW, I second whar Eloisa said about your lucky kids Santa...I have loved Pete Seeger and the Weavers since I was a kid...LOL well, almost a kid!
I grew up in Albert Lea, near the Iowa border, and I’m still here 52 years later. I had a good friend grow up in Dawson, and I believe her mother and sister still live there.
I eagerly await the pbs fund raising periods as there is almost always at least one evening devoted to FOLK. How wonderful. Specials with the Weavers, Peter, Paul and Mary, .. reunions of long retired groups, bringing back their youth ... and mine. Anyone remember the Hootenanny? from the mid-sixties? I still have my collection of vinyls. Don’t recall hearing Kate Wolf, but will certainly pick up one of her cds, and llisten to it while I read all the squawks.

I love folk music. I went to a Peter, Paul and Mary concert at the symphony hall in Houston, and it was great. They’re the most relaxed people on stage that I’ve ever seen—at one point they were arguing about what to sing and Mary turned to the audience and said, “Just talk among yourselves while we get this settled.”
So thank you, Eloisa, I’m off to Amazon to get this album right now.
