Um...what’s a ‘ska’?
Liz- you always have the most intriguing music blogs, although I have to second Santa, what is ‘ska”?
OT I found Hot Dish at Borders today-Yay!!
Di
Santa and Di R, ska is a subgenre of music. Incredibly cool. It came out of Jamaica in the 60s, maybe 50s, and was a collision of--or maybe what generated--reggae and rocksteady. Definitely had elements of pop and rock, too. (I’m no music historian, so am not honestly sure of its roots.) Then, in the late 70s, a bunch of bands picked it up and ran with it, putting their own spin on it. If you want to listen to one of the original instigators, check out Desmond Dekker (who did “Israelites” and “Allamana"), who I adore. It’s just really neat-o music. (Of course, I’m posting at the moment filled with wine, so I could be off-base even with this...)
And, Mollita, THANKS! I’ll do some bouncing in the family room on your behalf.
Thanks for the clarification! LOL, you are my music resource!
In other news.....I can’t believe Borders, of all places, has HOT DISH on the shelf already! But that’s okay, I’ll know where to buy it when it comes out because I HAVE THE ARC!!!!!!
Santa
Running over to the other thread now!
Liz--
I adore ska! (My college roommate and I actually had a little ska radio show back in the dark ages. She had 95% of the musical knowledge, but kindly let me pretend along with her in the wee hours of the morning.)
Have you ever heard the Voodoo Glowskulls? They’re a great modern take on ska/punk fusion. I saw them in concert maybe twelve years ago. Boy, do those guys know how to rock. And, they keep going and going.
Ooo, Melissa B, thanks for the rec! I’m off to iTunes to check them out now.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Specials! I almost named my first daughter Rudy.
Our ten-year old daughter used to sing along to “He’s just a stereotype...”, only she sang “He’s just a scary monster...”
It’s wonderfully uplifting music.
I adore the Specials. I used to have this on cd, but alas it has disappeared, and now I absolutely have to go find it again!!! Thanks, Liz!!
Such a great album-- I can’t help bouncing up and down in response to that great, jangly rhythm guitar and ironic horn section.
“What am I doing here? Watching the girls go by
Spending money on beer”
bounce bounce bounce bounce
My fav. song though was a cover- Rudy. The sweet harmonies as they gently lecture their friend.
“Stop your messin’ around (a-oooooo)
Betta’ think of your futah (a-oooooo)”
I LOVE your music blogs! Thanks for this one, eSpecially.
