Elizabeth, thank you so much for introducing this cd to me.  After I saw the movie, “Master and Commander:Far Side of the World”, which I absolutely love, I went right out and bought the soundtrack.  I love, love, loved the music in that movie.  The scenes where Aubrey and Steven were playing were some of the best, I thought.

Thanks to you and all of the Squawkers and Squawkees (as someone else called them) I have huge lists of books and cds to buy.  When someone asks me what I want for my birthday or Christmas, I give them a list to choose from now.  grin

You’re welcome, AA!  There’s a “Musical Evenings” volume 2, too, if you want to add that to your list. wink I know what you mean. I started my Christmas list months ago, and it has tons of books that we’ve blogged about here, and tons of CDs you guys have recommended for me over the past year. Gonna be a literary, musical Christmas around here.

And I must say, I love your avatar. My husband introduced me to Sharpe, the series (he loves those books, too), but there are times when I’m drooling over Patrick way more. Gorgeous, both of them.

This is totally off topic - but I am looking for a book and hope you can all help

Not too long ago, I read a book with an excerpt at the end of a book coming soon.  The characters had nicknames - the heroine was known as Angel (I think) and the the hero (Beast).  Any ideas who the author is and when the book will come out?

Thanks!

Sounds fabulous! I haven’t read any of the Jack Aubrey books, but I love the Horatio Hornblower books (and the films, starring Ioan Gruffudd!!!).

Can’t help you with the book, Anna, but maybe someone else knows?

Ah, Lady Jane, you mentioned another popular series around here--Hornblower. Another fave of the hubby, and another I totally don’t mind watching.  wink

And anybody who loves historical fiction, especially of the maritime persuasion, he’s also a fan of the books by Dewey Lambdin, Alexander Kent, Dudley Pope and Frederick Marryat. (David says that last actually lived the life and wrote in the early 1800s.) Go read and enjoy, history nuts!

Elizabeth......I first saw Sean Bean in the LOTR movies and loved him.  That’s when I discovered that he was in the Sharpe series.  I went to my Netfliz queue and started at the beginning and watched all of the Sharpe movies.  And yes, Daragh O’Malley is gorgeous, isn’t he?  And that accent.  I could sit and listen to him read the telephone directory and I’d be a happy woman!!  wink I loved the Horatio Hornblower series also.  That I own on dvd, I liked it so much.

Yes, I’m a history nut.  I didn’t think it was that obvious.  smile

Horatio Hornblower was one of my favorites also.  This evening on PBS (Masterpiece Theatre) is another great sea tale.  “To the Ends of the Earth” by Willaim Goldings.  The timeline is right after the Napoleonic War.  I believe Sam Neill is in this PBS miniseries.

Loved Horatio Hornblower! What a great TV adaptation it was, and beautifully cast. And thank you, Liz, for another fascinating recommendation. When I read your music blogs, I feel as if I live in a musical rut and you’re pulling me out.

Altho you could :: cough :: blog on one of the Ella Fitzgerald songbooks and I’d be awfully happy.

Thanks so much for this recommendation.  My DH read all the books and loves chamber music.  I can see both “Evenings” will be on my list for him this year.

Love all the sea/hist/fic mentioned above, hey Linda, good recom. on the PBS series!
Liz, great chamber music, makes you slow down (like fall) and enjoy the day…
O’Brian, et all..are great listening to with books on tape..(along with H. Potter, and Agatha Christie!) Maybe it’s the British accents, I don’t know!

Thanks for the CD recommendation.  I have read more than half of the Aubrey/Maturin series.  Actually I have listened to them.  A great narrator can make all that battle detail almost understandable.  My husband is a big fan of the movie so now I have a good stocking stuffer for Christmas this year.  I like to describe the books as “manly men doing manly things.” What I really would like to see is Sofie and Diana’s story.  These two very strong women get very little attention in the books, but their stories would be a real page turner.  Also, let us not forget the fact that Russell Crowe plays Jack Aubrey.  That fact alone makes the movie worth watching.
