Liz’s Annual Post-Holiday Music Round-Up

Wow Liz! Did you put that A GOOD YEAR CD cover up there just for me? You’re such a good friend!
I did love the music in that movie and was planning on buying it. Wonderful recomendations all the way around!
I gave several CDs this year - mostly rock, though! (AC/DC and Nirvana for my son, Hannah Montana for my daughter, and Allman Brothers for my husband.) I also got my husband Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan collections I’m really excited about hearing.
I’ve heard Corinne Bailey Rae on the radio -I think she’s great, too. I’ll have to check out everyone else. Thanks for the recommendations!
Need I ask if A GOOD YEAR was a good movie?
I hear ya on the female artists, I’ve down loaded all of KT Tunstall’s stuff and also a group called The Be Good Tanya’s..they had a song in the movie “Because of Winn Dixie” I love that sound track, and listen to it alot.
Also, got U2’s singles CD, and their book U2 by U2, it is unputdownable (some word, huh?).
On my list: Josh Groban’s newest, also C.B. Rae..other stuff (maybe to download) by Foo Fighters (love all theirs), and Rise Against..so much to listen to..
Happy 2007 to all!
My Dh knows how much I love the music from one of my favorite tv shows, so he gave me the soundtrack from CSI: Miami.
What a rich, rich list, Liz! Thanks. I’m off to Borders in a little while and will see what I can find. The Cat Power looks particularly appealing.
You are one who will appreciate my latest discovery: Lhasa de Selo. I can’t stop playing The Living Road, over and over. Exotic, world beat, smoky voice.
Thanks, Liz! I’m off to iTunes to give these guys a listen.
Omigosh, Liz! I love Paris Combo! They’re one of my favorite groups out there! I found their most recent CD Living Room earlier this year and was totally taken by it. And of course, I went out and found all of their other CDs, as well.
No new music for Christmas for me, but I do hope to see something from them or Sinclair (another French musician)--if he’s doing anything new in the coming year.
Happy New Year(’s Eve)!
LdyB
I envy you guys. I can’t download from iTunes (not available in my area). I’d like to download The Icicles, Psapp, Ivy and Jem.
In the meantime, i seek recommendations on French music. The only ones I have are Dimitri from Paris’s Sacre Blue (one of my fave cds) and French Cafe (from the Putumayo series). I am thinking of getting Aznavour because i heard a few songs of his from a movie. So which CD should I start with? Are there other musicians/singers I should consider - with the lounge-y vibe of Dimitri’s Sacre Blue?
Thanks
I like Joel Virgel....French, bien sur.
Did I spell that right?
And PJ, you know Spanish? Where did you learn it?
Liz, you are, without a doubt, the most knowledgeable person I “know” with regards to music. My husband is a walking encyclopedia on 60’s, 70’s (artist, year, album and track number) and classical but you know about all genres of music. I’m stuck in a 70’s time warp but I enjoy being educated by you every week. I agree with J Perry - you have another calling that you need to answer (but don’t stop writing!). Knowledge and enthusiasm like yours is a gift and should be shared with more than just us chickies.
I’m channeling my Puerto Rican side tomorrow and will be serving pernil and pink beans tomorrow. I think I’ll put on some Charanga ‘76 and Ray Barreto while I’m cooking - in your honor.
Code word - getting86 - seems like it some days! LOL
On my list is one left - 9 by Damien Rice. I fell in love with his voice and music in his first CD “O”. Very lovely!
Purchased already -
Foo Fighters “Skin and Bones”
Loreena McKennitt - The Ancient Muse
Awake - Josh Groben
Wintersong - Sara McLachlan
I got the “Marie Antoinette” soundtrack (which is a great mix) and Josh Groban’s “Awake” (I love his voice). I have them on constant rotation in my CD player.
Happy New Year everyone!
I love Loreen McKennitt’s music. My favorite is The Book of Secrets, recommended here by our very own Liz.
I’m looking forward to Gjallarhorn (Swedish & Finnish folk music) to release their newest CD in the U.S. I saw them live last summer and was completely blown away by their sound.

I can’t wait for Norah Jones new CD as well as the debut CD of Sacha Boutros. Her sound is best described as Latin jazz lounge, very sexy and sophisticated. Her voice is gorgeous!
Cheers,
Mary
I just downloaded The Wrecker’s album. I love Michelle Branch, and she and her partner make fantastic harmonies together.
My college aged nieces made me a “hipness” CD, full of groovy college music, most of which I’ve never heard of. The 88, The Postal Service, Ray LaMontagne, and Regina Spektor. I apparently was in need of a hipness update. So, now I’m so hip I can’t stand it.
The cd I’m looking for is by Lacuna Coil. They do a really great remake of Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode.
Liz, I look forward to these Sunday blogs because I always learn something from your music blogs.
I only received a couple of CDs for Christmas this year: Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris’s All the Roadrunning and Johnny Cash’s A Hundred Highways. Both were on my TBB list, and they have received lots of play over the past week. I still tear up when I listen to “If This Is Goodbye.”
(My word veri is just27. Don’t I wish? Well, maybe not.
)
On my list already are Corinne Bailey Rae, Anjani, and Cat Power.
I swear, Liz, if ever Bill Flannagan--the sometime music critic on CBS Sunday Morning--should ever retire, you should replace him.
I SO exited about the propect of Anjani.
And my sister (fluent in French) really appreciated the Carla Bruni CD I stuffed in her stocking.
