Oh Liz, I adored this album and still do.  I’ll never forget hearing THE LOGICAL SONG when I was a senior and my best friend and I had just gotten a stern talking to (well-deserved) from our beloved minister’s wife because we both had a bad case of “senioritis” and were being really mean to our Sunday school teacher.  It was playing in the car as we drove home without speaking and just seemed to sum up all of our confusion about who we were supposed to be.

GOODBYE STRANGER is my favorite.  I actually knew twins named Mary and Jane at the time so it just seemed so personal.

Liz,!  a social out-cast, I don’t believe it!!  I thought you might be blogging about “vinyl” !! My kids love the ‘big’ album covers! And what happened to Supertramp?, they were the thinkers of the rock groups, then, weren’t they?
I’d add ‘Yellow Brick Road’ by Elton John and ‘Rumors’ by Fleetwood Mac to the cannon of social rock..all good stuff..
You are 100% right good music is good music, 30 (eek) + years on now..*sigh*

I, too, was the class of ‘79.  Boy, does that bring back memories!  I was heavily into my Top 40 listening, but fortunately, Supertramp was played frequently.  I haven’t heard any Supertramp songs in a while, but yes, they defintely withstand the test of time.  The big “meaningful” song where I grew up was “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas.  Remember that one?

I was definitely not with the “in” crowd but had my own group of friends, who I still see today even though we are scattered.  This was good training for me as a parent - when my 9-year-old daughter sadly informed me she was not part of the popular crowd, I told her that her dad and I weren’t either but we found having just a few close friends worked for us.  My very practical child was obviously relieved, and responded with “oh, it just runs in the family.”

Off topic: I went to the Susan Elizabeth Phillips book signing Friday.  Teresa, you were right!  It was so much fun and she is so nice and friendly.  I’m now waiting for the next Squawker tour!

I love this album. My mom used to listen to it and finally gave it to me when I moved.

Carolyn, I’m so glad you made it to the signing!  Isn’t Susan wonderful?  I know I’ve said this before but you guys just can’t know how much it means to us to see your friendly faces at our signings smile

Funny how just seeing the album cover makes all those songs play in your head right away!  I graduated high school in ‘79 too and when I started university that fall this was the album I heard blasting from everybody’s dorm room.

You know they had great songs when one of theirs was just covered this year - I can’t remember which one or by whom at the moment but I remember telling my kids it wasn’t a new song but an oldie from when I was young.

I am so psyched that I actually know and love a group from the music blog.  ‘The Logical Song’ spoke volumes to my friends and I.  Everything was dramatic and traumatic for us.  It was reflected in the songs we danced to, the poetry we wrote...everything.  I even had a friend who actually wrote out a last will and testament.  In those days we imploded rather than exploded.  Yes, teen agnst to the nth degree but we came out of it stronger and, as you said, more self-assured and ready to follow our own paths.

I still have that LP and since you mentioned this I am going to drag it our and put it on.  Great song, great album.  It brings back such fond memories from my senior year, 1980 also.

"The Logical Song” came out when I was 9. It was my favorite song. I am not even sure I knew what it was about. I just loved the words.

That album still holds a special place in my heart! Thanks for the memories!

Yay for all the members of the class of ‘79!

I should confess, Ms. Mary, that by senior year, I actually wasn’t as outcast as in previous years (in a word, oog), but being wildly creative meant I didn’t have much in common with anyone, so I sure felt adrift.

Wendy, it was “Give a Little Bit,” which the Goo Goo Dolls covered. I like their version, but the original is still the best.

Lee Ann, I’m that way with REO Speedwagon’s “Hi Infidelity.” It was all we had on a week-long bus trip with a bunch of other college students, and although I remember the trip with great fondness, I can’t stand that album anymore. (Not that I was any great REO Speedwagon fan to begin with...)

I’m happy that I could bring back some fun memories, you guys!
