SUZANNE ENOCH TELLS US WHY BILLIONAIRES PREFER BLONDES
51 Comments
Hi Suzanne! My jaw just dropped when I read about TWICE THE TEMPTATION. Fantastic idea that I will now predict to be a big hit! And may even start a trend. Sheesh, you have a great year ahead, or actually, us readers do
I have been amazed and thrilled to see so many of my fav historical authors write such wonderfully entertaining contemporaries and I’m looking forward to many more!
Nice to see you here and Happy Holidays!
Suzie, I’m so excited! 2007 is going to be a wonderful—and lucrative—year for you! Have you been pondering the possibilities of another historical series yet?
Does anyone else notice that the number “69” comes up alarmingly often in the word/number safety combo?
I enjoy both contemps and historicals, so of course I would follow a favorite author wherever she would choose to go. I love the idea of a series binding the two together; that sounds really fun.
Rick and Sam are a great couple (I hope they do marry someday). I also love your historicals. So I’m with Janelle - what’s next historically (besides the combo platter story)? Spill!
Uh, my verification code is, uh, comes17 - no comment
Welcome Suzanne!!
I would follow an author whose writing style I enjoy into any genre they chose. I know Lisa Kleypas will be doing some contemporaries also and since she has not dissappointed me yet with ANY of her historicals, I’m sure to pick up anything she writes.
Wait a minute! I thought I was writing HOLY COW, I HOPE I MAKE MY DEADLINE!
Hi SuzieE,
if they write as well as you do, I will follow them everywhere.
As I read BPB I was actually wondering if you would ever write about Rick’s ancestors. I am pretty sure he has some dashing rakes as forbears.
So I’m glad we get at least a short insight into his family.
Julia
Suzanne, I enjoyed FLIRTING WITH DANGER and look forward to reading the next four!
I definitely follow the author’s voice. I’d probably read almost any genre by the authors I enjoy most (except horror - but I’m squeamish and suggestible).
Teresa, I read THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED ME last week. I’ve started several books lately that I’ve put down until “later.” This one, though, I read in one sitting. I love this series!
Nice avi, Julia!
You know a year or two ago, I’d say, I was sticking with historicals, I love the uptight/corsetted/high brow of the historical set with simmering underneath it all tension..but..
A good story is a good story, and if you are happy with an authors style, that will (usually) translate into any time period.
That was a big step, Suzanne, quitting that day job. A fine line somedays, from just drifting to freeing up your day for the creative work. I’ve never regretted it, but it was a bit scary at first!
Off topic: Any one seen “The Fountain” w/Hugh Jackman yet? I heard good buzz on this one…
While I will always be a history harlot at heart, I do read contemporaries and have been lured into the present by my favorite romance writers. It depends on my mood, kind of like do I want tea or a Coke Zero? I imagine it keeps writers fresh to switch genres. Thanks for Squawking!
And there’s always HOLY MOLEY, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, HOLY CR*P for title choices. And many more--I keep hearing Robin talking to Batman.
A “history harlot” Maggie! I love that!
And I too read for a good story. I have very eclectic tastes anyway so I read all over the place but I will definitely give a historical author a try in contemp. (I would have missed some fabulous books if I hadn’t!)
I’m easy!! LOL
If I love the author (which I do LOVE Suzanne Enoch), I’ll read whatever they write!! It the author’s voice that moves me, not necessarily which time period they write in.
Thanks, Teresa. I think history harlot is way classier than history whore!
And Carolyn, thank you so much for your sweet comments about VAMPIRE! I had so much fun writing that book and I hope it shows.
Hi Suzanne,
Welcome to Squawk! I love your writing. I’ve read all your historicals (or at least all that I could get my hands on). I have not followed you to contempories yet--I’m afraid. Is there a support group for this?
I have actually had a billionaire experience. (Well 2 if you want to count Warren Buffet, but he’s not that exciting to look at.)
I was on a Virgin Atlantic flight with Richard Branson on the way back from London this past summer. He is a Hottie, Hot, Hottie. He was sitting an isle away from me--okay, 2 if you want to get technical--and went through our cabin saying hello to everyone. I think I managed a very sophisticated “Aarrrgh, gurgle.” I’m proud that I didn’t actually drool on him. Talk about charisma, it just rolls off of him.
Thank you for giving me an excuse to tell that story again.
Okay, I’m getting closer to making the jump. Should I read this series in order?
Hi, Suzanne! I love your historicals and can’t wait to read SINS OF A DUKE.
I haven’t been able to break over into contemps yet. I only read historicals but I have been able to break into the paranormal, so maybe one day.... but for now, I just really enjoy diving into the past. I figure I live contemporary every day so I really don’t have much desire to read it. Although, I have no problem with my favorite authors following where their muse leads them. I just hope we historical addicts don’t run out of reading material before long…
Susie (sensing a contemp pattern here)
I definitely follow the author - as long as I’m enjoying the story, it doesn’t matter when it takes place.
Congrats Suzanne on the new book! Can’t wait for the new releases; I especially love the title for Rick and Sam’s book. *g*
Hi Suzanne!
Thanks for coming to Squawk! Freedom Day-- I like the sound of that and I’m really glad that you, like Lisa, are committed to double dipping! yeah!
Connie
Welcome Suzannne!
I have ALL your books except for “The Black Duke’s Prize”. Used Books stores, in the East Coast, know of my search for this book. I was once out bidded for a used copy. You don’t want to know how much the bidding was up to( in the 200 range).
I will follow a favorite historical author to contemporary out of curiosity. Just to see if their historical writing voice was in it. To be honest, most of the ones that have written them have not disappointed me. Plus I actually like it when they genre jump. To me, it’s called good creativity.
P.S. Janelle, my word is theres69. Curious?!?
Hi Suzanne, I’m so excited you’re here. I am a huge fan of Sam & Rick. Tami (from above) sent me Flirting with Danger a couple of months ago and said i would love it. Well she was right. I fell in love with that book and ordered Don’t Look Down Right away. I haven’t read Billionaires Prefer Blondes but I’m saving it for when I can sit down and actually read without so many distractions. These were my first books of yours that I read and I look forward to more on Sam and Rick, not to mention your historicals. Any recommendations as to where I should start with your historicals? I know I’ll love them too.
Have a great day!
Wow! It’s 8 am here and rainy, and I sit down at the computer to find out that a lot of people get going in the morning before I do. *g*
I love writing in both genres—I think it keeps me fresher—so I’m very glad to see that even you guys who don’t read both are open to the idea of doing so.
And Teresa, HOLY COW, I HOPE I MAKE MY DEADLINE is only the working title. If it goes well, the actual title will be YAY, I MADE IT. Otherwise it’ll be a really short book called UH-OH.
I HAVE *PLEASURE FOR PLEASURE* IN HAND! The cover is beautiful.
(Along with MUST LOVE MISTLETOE, and GIVE HIM A SLIP)
Just love going thru those shipping crates at BAM, LOL. But, Christina, no sign of yours yet
May I suggest that one should *absolutely* read FWD, DLD and BPB in order. IMO, whenever an author writes a series, the only way to truly appreciate all the dynamics of the characters is to read them as written
Congrats Suzanne!
I’ll follow an author through time periods and genres as long as they don’t lose their voice. My reading is pretty eclectic too but I love to discover new authors as well as join my favorites when they spread their wings!
Love your titles...Holy Cow, Yay and Uh Oh kind of sound like titles for child rearing books!!!!!
Wow this is so great to be able to chat with all you authors!! Thanks Squak Radio!!!
Coincidence or what! Saw the title to the post and couldn’t believe it but I just recently bought the book not even 24 hours ago! I was yesterday at our local bookstore and what do I notice on the bookshelf - a new title that I haven’t seen before and what’s amazing is being in South Africa let me tell you the new releases don’t arrive always in time with the release date as in the US. So I was surprised to pick up Billionaires Prefer Blondes.
Loved the story of Sam and Rick and can’t wait to see what happens next with them. Thanks Suzanne for an awesome read. LOL I couldn’t wait to get home so I ordered a latte and started reading in store. Had to stop on pg 335 as the store was closing which I quickly finished at home *grin*
I definitely follow the author - as long as I’m enjoying the story, it doesn’t matter when it takes place. I love that you want to go to contemporary; I am with you on that.
Bubbles,
My historicals tend to be trilogies, though they all stand alone, as well. The current one is actually a quadrilogy (thanks, Douglas Adams *g*), and starts with SIN AND SENSIBILITY, followed by AN INVITATION TO SIN and SOMETHING SINFUL. The fourth book will be out in June. They’re probably the easiest to find in bookstores, so they’re a good place to start.
Dear Suzanne,
A quadrilogy? I’m writing those and I never knew what it was! Those are wonderful titles. Of course, as a historical author I feel a bit grumpy about all these authors who are mysteriously able to write contemporaries (I’m a total failure at a contemporary voice). But your voice is great in both eras!
You...you...you lucky thing. *g*
Eloisa
Hi Suzanne!
First I got to admit I have been waiting for Sebastians book since Sin and Sensibility came out, so I can´t wait!
And yes, I would absolutely follow a favourite author everywhere! So whatever she or he writes, I´d give it a try.
Suzanne,
I am going out NOW to BUY ALL OF YOUR books.... *note to self* must find a way to help Suzanne read all of her books before anyone else sees them, you know… so I can read them all first. :O)!
I loved this blog, and I am thrilled by this diamond! In the past… a romance all its own behind it.... then the present… just omg. I love it when authors do stuff like this.. it is so fabulous.
I am so so so so glad you quit your day job.
And so far I’ve noticed (I am a big everything reader… contemp, paranormal, chicklit, suspense, historical, regency, and so on)... that the romance authors that have first written historical and decide to write contemp have a certain H-factor about their work.
The H factor is so good (the historical factor) that I just love love love when they break into contemporary.. there are certain details, nuances, and just a subtle edge to the contemps I’ve noticed… Like Christina Dodd’s books for example.. and Connie Brockway!!! Julie Garwood...When historical writers go modern… for any amount of time, I am SO excited. Can’t wait to read your stuff…
YAY~!!!!
Hi Suzanne,
I’ll follow a good author anywhere. That is one of the reasons I like SquawkRadio so much. It is full of great authors who have great taste in other authors and introduce them here. I read alot, in all different genres and there is an awful lot out there that isn’t great. I good writer can make any time period or genre worth reading about and once I find an author I like I want to read everying. Historicals are my favorite, but combining a contemporary with an historical is really interesting. I love to see those family characteristics carried down throught the generations.
Hi Suzanne!
I love all your books! I’m looking forward to all your upcoming stories. You’ve got quite a full schedule for 2007.
Did you find that you had to do a lot more, or less, research for the contemporaries? Was it as fun as researching for the historicals?
Hi!
I think I’ve read most of your books and liked them all. Flirting with Danger was great and I’m looking forward to Billionaires.
Most important to me is the writing. I’ll read about horses in space if it’s well written enough
. And I quite like books that cross genres.
Happy writing!
Hi Suzanne,
I love your books.
I love Sam and Rick even more than your historicals. I can’t wait for more from them. Something sparkly?? Sam is going to totally freak out!!
)
You aren’t planning to stop writing about them are you?
*keeping my fingers crossed*
My farourite historicals would be the Lessons in Love series. Loved them.
McNan, you must read them in order. They are so much better that way.
Teresa, I read TVWLM last night - in 3 hours. Loved it. Julian is ..... sigh....
Voice is more important than setting. Although I did willingly follow Connie’s leap from historicals to contemporary (which she did without so much as a hiccup), I might pause if she decided to write a romance in the setting of the Caveman Era. Mainly because...well, I couldn’t get past the setting to allow the voice to capture me.
But then, maybe not. Connie would have a way of making even falling in love in the Caveman Era funny and erotic.
colinfirthfan said....

~sounds like Suzanne Enoch Marathon for me for Christmas~! yay!!!! Thanks for the reading in order hint… can’t wait to get my hands on these....
& Firefly… horses in space.... hmm....
I love the point you made, and did I mention that I LOVE your HERO in space icon? I am about due to watch serenity again…
Hi, Manuelita! Great question. I think I do more research for the Historicals, whereas with the Contemporaries I have to look for specific things—what are the 5 star restaurants in West Palm Beach, how much does a Hogarth go for at auction. It’s funny, because some of that stuff you could make up for a Regency, where I know that a Mustang is a muscle car but I would have to look up the trim details for a phaeton.
Colinfirthfan, I’ll keep writing Sam and Rick stories as long as 2 things happen: people still want to read them; and the characters have growing to do. I don’t know how much fun writing or reading about a “caper of the week” would be unless they still have something personal, emotional, or philosophical at stake.
Firefly, I would totally read about horses in space if Joss Whedon did the writing. Every time I can, I work in the line “let’s be bad guys”, as a tribute. *g*
And I would absolute read about love in the caveman times if Connie wrote it. Connie?
I’ve read 2 of Suzanne’s books .... out of order… I’ve read Don’t Look Down about 5 times.... I HAVE to read them in order now… I can’t wait…
I loved the suspense and tension… and danger/action adventure in DLD & of course everything else one would want in a romance novel… Anyway, I can’t wait to get all of them, and to read them in the right order.
Oh thank you colinfirthfan! I knew we shared the same taste in men and I’m glad you enjoyed getting to know Julian as much as I did
I find that most of my favorite authors write well in either historical or contemporary. And I like both genres.
So, I guess my answer is I will follow those authors to the gates of hell as long as they give me a good story in the process.
BTW, I have just finished re-reading all my Enoch books for the umpteenth time and am now ready to tackle “Billionaires Prefer Blondes”. My only wish is that Samantha could clean up her potty mouth a bit. But that’s just me. Frankly, I think she is way too cool to use the 4 letter words.
Suzie! My ISP has been giving me fits all day, so I’m just now getting in to say HI! and WELCOME to Squawk! I am sooooo looking forward to BPB. And what a good idea, doing the two-in-one. Something else to look forward to.
Oh, and my current work-in-progress is tentatively titled WHAT THE !@#$ WAS I THINKING?
Wait a minute, Liz! That was going to be the title for the book after HOLY COW, I HOPE I MAKE MY DEADLINE, which Suzie has already stolen. Guess I’m stuck with ARRRGGGHHHHHHH!!! and ARRRGGGHHHHHHH: THE SEQUEL for my next titles.
Teresa, it would not matter if your cover title was “Nothing to read inside”, I would buy it just because your name is on it.
I am fairly new to this genre, and earlier this year, I was drawn by the cover of AFTER MIDNIGHT. I loved it and could not wait until June for Sequel...which sadly got pushed to September. So between the library and the used book store, I managed to read everything else you have written while I waited for TVWLM. (which was great)
And now, thanks to this site, I have added several books to the list of must reads.
Suzanne, I am very much looking forward to reading your books. Thanks SquawkRadio for this site. I feel like I have a whole new set of friends who understand reading addiction.
Prudence
Historicals have always been my favorites but, yes, if I enjoy an author I will buy their books in other genres and I’m usually glad that I did!
Thanks for the very nice compliments, everyone! And Elizabeth, I’m fairly certain that computers are self aware, and that they don’t like us. Nothing ever breaks down on the day I begin a book. It’s always the moment right after I tell myself that I’m going to make that deadline. *g*
JUST finished Something Sinful last night WONDERFUL! I do like the Griffin family. And am I glad to hear that poor Sebasten gets another “love of his life”. I reaaaalllly like “the Duke”
Suzie, you have a WONDERFUL voice, which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed in your historicals. I’ve tried contemporaries, but they just don’t work for me. While I love TV shows (like MOONLIGHTING) that mix those contemporary elements, it’s different when it comes to books. Yeah, I’m a geek like you when it comes to sci-fi movies and TV, but I prefer historicals for romance reading. Maybe it’s the clothes or the tension of the societal strictures, but that’s what works for me.
On the other hand, I’ve also wasted money on historicals while hoping to find a great voice. For me, it’s the combination of voice and setting that creates the magic. If I was stuck on a desert island that had only two books--a contemporary with a great voice and an historical romance without--I’d be drawn to both, but satisfied by neither.
Interesting question, though!
Suzanne - you epitomize for me what my personal sig is: SMBSLT...SoManyBooksSoLittleTime!!
Santa
Busily adding all Suzanne’s titles to her TBB list!
"Saint doesn’t have to be good, because he’s so very… very bad.”
I keep that line always in my mind…
There’s NO hero like Saint.
I love HIM!
Love your books, Suzie!!!
What a great way to start my week! It’s very encouraging to hear that so many of you are at least open to trying something new from a writer established in another genre.
Thanks to all of you, and to the ladies of Squawk for inviting me to stop by and chat with everybody. And now back to HOLY COW, I HOPE I MAKE MY DEADLINE—which is looming ever nearer and is now making growling sounds at me.
Suzanne Enoch
Better late than never right?
Suzanne I LOVE your historicals and I can’t wait for Sebastian’s story (he had my heart from the first out of all the Griffins, just like Robert from the first of the Lessons in Love books).
I’m totally willing to follow my favorite historical authors into contemps, but I like it when they still do both. If they totally quit one to to do the other, I end up missing the historicals. I’ve got your three current contemps waiting for me when I get home on winter break - can’t wait to read them!!!!
Kat
Welcome, Suzanne!!
I am will follow a favorite author anywhere, as long as it leads to a great story. The author’s voice and how well the story is told is the most important part.
I know that if given just a couple pages to read that didn’t have anything but words on it, I could pick out my favorite authors work everytime.
Have a great day!
