Good morning, Squawkers~~

Quickly, before I run off to suck blood… Beauty and the Beast was one of my favorites. And I, too, quickly lost interest when they killed off Catherine. WHAT were they thinking????

IDOJ was a funny show--when I was a kid, but it lost some of its “zing” when I saw reruns as an adult...I dunno, something about that whole “master-genie” thing...hmmm....

I’m definitely a BUFFY fan, Spike being my pick between the two male vamps.  But, hey, I’ll take either, thank you very much.

I personally loved the romantic tension between the two main characters in CHINA BEACH and am waiting patiently (!!!) for them to actually release it on DVD.

The Scarecrow and Mrs. King has to be an all-timed fav.  It doesn’t have the same “weight” that Beauty and the Beast does - but it’s great romance in it’s own right.

Northern Exposure had it’s share of romance too.

Can you tell how long it’s been since I really watched a series (not counting ER - and it’s many romances)?  Good grief.  I feel old.

I was definitely a Beauty and the Beast fan. Like you I will choose to ignore the last season.  I even got my husband to watch, but I am sure that had nothing to do with Linda Hamilton smile

Two other shows jump out at me as being incredibly romantic and short lived - of course - if I like it it will be cancelled post haste.

Relativity which starred Kimberley Williams was on in 1996.  It was “watch it with a box of tissues” romantic.  It was about twenty-something lovers who meet in Italy and continue their romance at home in the United States.  Hmm, I am having visions of Eloisa grin

The other show I loved was Homefront with that yummy actor Kyle Chandler who is now on Friday Night Lights.  Homefront took place right after WWII and all the repercussions of GIs returning home.  Pure romance.

Both my husband and I were hooked on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST from the very first episode.  It was such a beautifully written and acted show.  I never missed a week right up until they killed off Catherine.  That was the week I stopped watching and I never saw another episode.  Idiot TV executives!

Pamela, I also loved CHINA BEACH and the tension between the main characters.  What a terrific series!

One of my favorites (from more recent TV fare) was JAG.  I loved the relationship between Harm and Mac and I laughed and cried through their love story right along with them. There were so many wonderful episodes but one of my favorites was when Harm was lost at sea and Mac, upon hearing the news, realized how much she loved him, all of which happened on the eve of her wedding to another man.  I rooted for this couple for 10 seasons and never lost my interest in their story.

Avery, I liked RELATIVITY too and you’re sure right about those kleenex. Too bad the network never gave it a chance to gain an audience.

Two other series I loved were PROVIDENCE
and ED.  Who couldn’t root for Ed to win the girl of his high school dreams who turned into the woman he loved with all his heart.

I almost forgot about Beauty and the Beast!  My favorites are the Remington Steele and Scarecrow and Mrs. King type.  I like snappy dialogue. Also Cybil Shephard and Bruce Willis in the beginning of their detective show, I have a horrible memory for names!

Beauty and the Beast was a little before my time.  I think I was lusting after Johnny Depp on 21 Jump Street while that show was on.  I think I’ll check it out though because it sounds interesting.  Isn’t Ron Perlman the “Hellboy” guy?
Anyhow, all the love triangles makes ER my favorite romantic television show.

Teresa, I knew there was a reason why I love you....I LOVED Beauty & the Beast.  What a romance....Catherine & Vincent.  My all time favorite episode was the Halloween one.  I use to cry at every single episode because the “impossible” romance was soooo beautiful. I have on VHS the few episodes that were released and a few years back I recorded on SciFi all the episodes.  It use to be on at 2 or 3 in the morning.  Now the DVD but I also hated the 3rd season but I need the complete set even though I won’t watch it.

Chris & Rita-Silk Stalkings, Remington Steele & Laura Holt, Hart to Hart, McMillian & Wife, David Addison & Maddy, and Buffy & Angel are my other favorite couples.

I’m definitely a “McSteamy” woman.  The man looks fantastic in scrubs, a towel etc.  “McDreamy” has the hair and the eyes but “McSteamy” has the all around package.

I have to second (or is it third now?) Remington Steele and Homefront was great.  I was so upset when they took it off so quickly.

Jane Price - that would be Moonlighting and I loved that show.  And I loved Ed.  When he wore that suit of armor - how could you not root for him!

I never actually watched Beauty and the Beast but I might have to check out these DVDs.

I loved a short-lived show called Legacy which was on UPN I think about 8 years ago. It was about a family who bred thoroughbreds in Kentucky at the turn of the century. It was very romantic and the scenery was gorgeous and the men were especially gorgeous. Brett Cullen, who’s on Friday Night Lights now, was the father and Grayson McCouch was one of his sons. Yummy. I wish the series had lasted longer as it was very well produced but of course the good shows never last....

I also think last week’s episode of Grey’s was heartbreakingly romantic when McDreamy was sitting outside Meredith’s hospital room crying. Wow, Patrick Dempsey deserves an Emmy for that episode.

OMG Mad About You is like the theme “show” for my husband and I.

I remember that we could always totalling relate to the characters as shadowing our own personal relationship, and as soon as the first season came out on DVD we bought it, and watched an episode a week together, just like we used to on TV

Teresa,

I’d often wondered what happened to that show. I remembered when it ended and had watched a bit of it w/my mum when I was younger, but then it just seemed to disappear off the scene after the series ended. Glad to see they’re releasing the first season on DVD. And I completely agree with you regarding the whole kill of the heroine thing during the last season. What the heck was up with that?? It just ruined it for me.

And I share so much of the tastes of others on this board. One of my favorite shows as a child (and even now) was Hart to Hart. I loved Wagner and Powers in that show.

And I totally was a Providence fan, especially when Sydney and Owen got together. George Newbern was absolutely delicious to watch.

One of the most underrated shows today, however, is Studio 60. I am totally fascinated by watching Jordan and Danny’s relationship blossom and am just dying to see what happens between Matt and Harriet.

(And yes, I’m a recent GA convert. It has to be McDreamy! wink )

Teresa,

I have to say - IT’S YOUR FAULT!!!!

I’ve become hooked on Smallville. I just received Season 3 in the mail on Tuesday. I can’t help myself. I sit and play 3 to 4 of these episodes at a time. My house is wreck because I’d rather watch Smallville than vacum. I’m lucky to have clean clothes. And my cats are lucky I remember to feed them and clean their litterboxes.

But thanks to you I’ve discovered a great series that I’d only paid scant attention to in the past.

Outside of Smallville, the only other series I’ve purchased on DVD is La Femme Nikita, one of the darkest but most romantic series I think I’ve every seen.

Now I’m looking forward to a new series coming on Lifetime called BloodTies, a new crime series with bite! It looks yummy.

These posts have brought back some memories of wonderful shows.  I watched “Beauty & the Beast” with my oldest son, who must have been around 12 at the time.  He’s 24 now, and maybe this explains why he’s such a SF/F fan.  Loved “Relativity” both for the romance but also because it was about families (hence the title), and the actor who played the lead was completely and totally gorgeous.  “China Beach” was fascinating because it helped humanize a war and soldiers who previously had been ignored or even despised, and the fact that it focused on women soldiers made it even better.  Dana Delaney was great as the lead.  And another romantic show was “Thirtysomething”.  I totally identified with the characters, as I was the same age, trying to juggle marriage, children, job, and friendships.  Any number of the shows hit very close to home in other ways, as when Melissa hooks up again with Gary after a long interval, and they then don’t know how to relate—it reminded me of all those relationships that don’t quite make it due to timing or one liking the other more or something.  At any rate, for a few years it was definitely on my “don’t miss” TV list.

I’m a fan of B&B - not the TV show, which I haven’t seen, but the Disney movie and McKinley’s stories.

Do you thrill to the love triangle between Clark, Lex, and Lana on SMALLVILLE?

Sort of, in the few moments I see before Supernatural airs.  But probably not the pairing you’re thinking of (which Lana keeps interrupting).  grin

Why choose one? wink Angel/Spike - it’s canon!  I also really liked Fred/Wes, probably because it was so tragic. But of all Whedon’s shows, I loved Zoe/Wash (sniff) best (and Mal/Zoe, but not necessarily in a romantic way).

I didn’t like Angel/Cordy because I thought they had great friendship chemistry but the romantic stuff felt forced.  Bangel, Spuffy… I like both about the same, depending on which Buffy we’re talking about.

I think Wes is probably my favourite Buffyverse character, though.  Something about the dorky, studious, crazy and dangerous (with a gun!)... (reminds me of Whedon’s Scott Summers, who I also really like. With Logan or Jean or Emma).

02/22  at  02:52 PM

{author}'s avatar firefly said...

Aside from Whedon shows…

I also quite liked Josh/Donna ("I wouldn’t stop for red lights."), but also Josh/Sam (shoulder bump!). (And Dan/Casey on Sports Night).

Logan/Veronica - but what are the writers doing?

House/Wilson - they had a date on Valentine’s Day. Hee.

And, my great romance of this year is Sam and Dean on Supernatural.  Not in any Wincest-y way (though if they weren’t related...), but I like the intensity of their relationship, which rivals many romantic pairings, not to mention all the banter and sibling stuff.

Hi all, First time poster, but I just had to jump in on this one.  I absolutely loved B&B when it was on, but not the last season.  As a teenager, I had the soundtrack tape and would fall to sleep to Ron reading Shakespear while soft music played in the background.  Those will always be my favorite sonnets.

I also have to say: SPIKE!! all the way.  He was the bad boy that you wanted to tame.  Angel was too soft.

But, David B is pretty hot on Bones. smile

I am also a big fan of Scarecrow and Mrs. King.  Love it!

Now I love watching CSI, Bones, Criminal Minds, etc.  You get the picture.

I used to do custom bridal work and burned out on picky brides.  Now I deal with sappy love during the day and can enjoy the thrill of a dead body and the pursuit of justice at night.

Don’t get me wrong.  I still love romance, but other than my own- I find the fiction of a good book better than listening to people complain about their lame husbands/lovers whatever.  I can’t help it if I lucked out with a great guy.smile

As for my TV shows now, I am a die-hard House fan. I know it’s not really a romance, but there is always that romantic underplay. Plus, who can resist that sarcastic wit. I certainly can’t.

PJ~ I love JAG too!! :D

As for Smallville, like with most WB (or is that CW now?) shows, I usually watch for the first few seasons and then I get bored. I always rooted for Chloe and Lex, even though I knew that’d never happen. I liked the potential fire between them. *sigh* I don’t think I could convince any TV execs of that, though.

Elsie, the “Halloween” episode of BATB is one of my favorites too.  Still love that image of he and Catherine sitting on the bench as the sun rises.

Gram, one of the highlights of the BATB conference I attended was when one of the producers aired the footage they wouldn’t allow them to air on TV at the time--Vincent and Catherine ACTUALLY kissing.  Needless to say, the place went wild and she was forced to show it a dozen times smile

KC, my husband and I feel the same way about MAD ABOUT YOU.  It was “us”!

I LOVED Beauty and the Beast and was so sorry to see it go.  Other shows that were so wonderfully romantic were ‘Moonlighting’ before they got together, ‘Mad About You’ before they screwed around with fidelity, ‘X-Files’ before they got together...and then weren’t.  Hmm, I sense a pattern here.

I also loved ‘Nanny and the Professor’, ‘The Ghost and Mrs. Muir’....

Oh, and, yes, ‘Farscape’....’Star Trek: Voyager’

Also, does anybody remember a short lived series about a vampire who was a cop?  It had some romance in it, but I can’t remember the name of it… Dark Knight? Something like that.

For ultimate romance on the TV, however, I always like the BBC/ A&E version of Pride and Prejudice.  I watch while I run on the treadmill. Keeps me going.smile

Elyssany, I have the remake of Dark Shadows on DVD--I thought Ben Cross made a very handsome, brooding Barnabas Collins.  I believe they ended the series prematurely because it was during the Gulf War and it didn’t do well in the ratings.  I loved it!  It was a good escape for me since my DH was in Saudi Arabia during the war.

My sisters and I used to watch the original Dark Shadows when we were kids.  I guess that’s why I love a good vampire romance. wink

Sorry to post again but I forgot to mention my all-time favorite tv romance - Diane and Sam from Cheers.

Also, does anybody remember a short lived series about a vampire who was a cop?  It had some romance in it, but I can’t remember the name of it… Dark Knight? Something like that.

Forever Knight?  I watched a few episodes, but enough to get hooked.  I think they were re-running it by then anyway.

And does anyone remember that show with Jane Seymour, she was a doctor and a very hunky guy was the family hero??

Dr Quinn Medicine Woman with Joe Lando… I think. Never watched it but I saw the comercials and he made an impression surprised Love that leatherstocking look!

Teresa, I agree Clark is way hotter when he is all high on the red Kryptonite.

Moonlighting
Remington Steele

YES! FARSCAPE!

And...I know that this sounds bizarre but, if you remember The Flying Nun.  Sally Field and Carlos Ramirez.  I know that it’s strange, the young novice and the benefactor, but think of the romances based on the very same premise.  The Catholic schoolgirl in me wanted Sally to be a nun, but the romantic in me wanted Sally to tame Carlos or vice versa.

Comments? Or, am I just wierd?

Home again, home again....to a bulging inbox, thanks to you buncha squawkin’ hens! wink

There’s a Britcom that I love that ended a few years back called COUPLING. Kind of a British “Friends” but sexier.

I love the tension between Patrick and Sally.  He’s a full-of-himself conservative who is certain he’s God’s gift to women and Sally is a neurotic liberal who’s convinced her neck and bottom are conspiring to expand when she’s not looking.

Well, early day tomorrow...nighty-night!

Carolyn,
My husband and I were watching the first season of CHEERS when we started dating (mainly because we didn’t have enough money to go to the movies!) and we SO identified with Sam and Diane.  It was really painful when they broke up the first time!

I’ve been doing the “happy dance” since my DVD of “Beauty & the Beast” arrived last Tuesday, and I’ve been treating myself to an episode as often as I can.  It’s so wonderful to see this beloved show again - like coming home to an old friend that still makes me sigh.  And Teresa, I think I was at the same “Beauty & the Beast” convention in Orlando!  (Was it 1990 or 1991? Somewhere in there?) We definitely *are* pop culture twins! wink

Firefly,

Yes, that’s the one.  I thought it had an interesting concept that could have gone far beyond the realms allowed by the tv show.  Maybe a novel in the making?  Hmmmm.....

Leanna,

I don’t think your weird.  Unless the rest of us are. In that case.....
I think you are just looking for romance anywhere it may be.  After all, my mother in law thinks Thornbirds is the greatest romance of all time and it’s about a priest.  So, a young innocent novice and a handsome, manly benefactor?  Sounds like a classic gothic romance to me.

Can you tell I’ve been brainstorming today?  Actually got an 8 page synopsis done.  Yeah!! Now if it makes sense tommorow.. different story. smile

Loved “Steele”, “Scarecrow”, “Buffy”, “China Beach”, “Moonlighting”, “X-Files”.

Someone mentioned “Dawson’s Creek”.  Yep, when Pacey & Joey got together, it was teenage angst at its best LOL.
Joey to Pacey “You remember that?”
Pacey whispers “I remember everything” Swoon!

“My So-Called Life” - come on, Jordan was hot if not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Oh and the show with Corky - Kellie Martin & Chad Lowe were a couple in it...oh I need to go Google it.

“Roswell”.  I’m sensing a theme here with all these teen shows LOL.

My previous comment should be “not enough to get hooked”, but what concepts about FK did you like?

I seem to prefer non-canon relationships… I’m not entirely sure why, except that perhaps there’s something about the unattainable… Or UST, even if it’s not always deliberate (but surely some of it between Lex/Clark is?)

I think Alexis Denisof has said he played Wes with a crush on Angel in the first few years.  And Joss has said that Spike was the best ingénue he’d thrown against Angel—though not in a romantic sense, apparently, just that they had chemistry.

Firefly..

Yeah..I loved Wes.

The outake where Spike kisses Xander in front of Willow is a hoot...some michievous ingenue!

I think JM’s gift is that he brings chemistry with him to whomever he plays against/with.

Hi!

I like most of the shows that you have named here. These days I’m watching “Roswell” and, even though it is a “teenager-tv-show”, the romance is great.

Spike. Mmm. It’s always so delicious watching the bad boy agonize over his feelings.

I loved the BBC series As Time Goes By. What a romantic story, and Judi Dench can do no wrong. She’s a Goddess.

And I liked to watch Sex & The City to see who Carrie would hook up with. So many hot guys, so little time.
