TERESA GOES SURFING
47 Comments
My favorite sites are (ofcourse) squawkradio.com, people.com, imdb.com, telegraaf.nl (dutch newssite), bbc.co.uk, mugglenet.com (secret harry potter fan
) and the greys’s anatomy site at abc’s. Since I’m a student I have enough free time on my hands to surf through the internet!
I don’t know what I’d do without IMDb. I know I checked it at least three times yesterday. And the recappers at TWoP are hilarious. I’ve never been to the Victoria Trading Co. Web site, but I get their catalogues, and they’re amazing. The other two sites I am definitely going to have to check out.
I visit fanfiction.net on a pretty regular basis to see what continuations of The Office people have written. A lot of them are pretty brilliant. And when you can’t get enough of your favorite TV show/movie/book/comic/video game/etc., this is the place to go.
Collegehumor.com is pretty hilarious. They’ve got funny articles about the fine art of college living.
For my young adult reading fix, I go to teenreads.com where they’ve got reviews of new and upcoming YA books.
A lot of people have probably heard of postsecret.com, the Web site where people send in their secrets on postcards to this man and he posts them on the site. A lot of them are funny. A lot of them are heartbreaking. Not a site to miss.
I’d never seen the Victorian Trading Co. site before. I absolutely LOVE it!! It almost makes me want to wear a dress.
My every day, must go-to sites are the “For Better or For Worse” comic strip, the AAR review site, MSNBC news site and Amazon (just in case there just might be a new book available that I didn’t know about before hand) along with other various blogs such as Goddesses and Risky Regencies.
I’m signing up for those Victorian Trading Co. catalogs right now.
-Beth
I’m about to go take a final, but I just wanted to chime in on TWoP - I LOVE that site. So much to be entertained by. I wish I had time to read more recaps, though. I spend most of my time on the forums.
I enjoy Overheard in New York and Overheard in the Office and their offshoots, where people send in the conversations going on around them. Some are hilarious, some are disturbing, and some are completely inappropriate. I found an Overheard in Law School (which is what I’m in now) that made my day. And jessie, I also like Postsecret.
The only site I visit on a daily basis besides Squak Radio is the public library, where I can reserve my favorite books on line.
If I have shopping (usually only purchasing books) I go to Amazon
Oh lots of sites! Terri - great list though!
I visit a variety of blogs, including Romance: By The Book and Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Novels (they’re my two favs...other than Squawk Radio). Site-wise, I’m ALL ABOUT entertainment gossip, so People.com, E! Online and TV Guide. I like the USA Today Life section too.
I also really like a site run by ABC called greyswriters.com. You can go there the day after an episode of Grey’s Anatomy airs and read a blog by the writer of the episode. They tend to be very insightful and fun.
Also Ain’t It Cool News is a great place for movie reviews written by fans, and spoilers of what I call “geek-boy” TV (24, Heroes, LOST, etc.).
Then I have a variety of author sites that I hit regularly, but the one I hit most often is JR Ward’s BDB message boards, because she’s on there all the time, and frequently drops tidbits about what she’s writing (currently putting the finishing touches on V and outlining Phury).
Wow, that’s a lot of sites, huh? I really do work as well. No really. :D
Teresa!!! I already spend WAAAAAY too much time here and you’re a cute little blonde devil suggesting other interesting sites on which to spend my time instead of cleaning
(I already know 2 out of the 5, btw
)
http://www.televisionwithout.......... you say?
J--going through major 24 withdrawl.
“Your husband insists that he just happens to look like your second cousin Earl (last seen floating face down in a bathtub full of hooch at the family reunion)"--you have one of these too? does every family? I’m usually sitting next to him, LMAO.
I go surfing at squawkradio, a few authors websites, IMdb, movie-mistakes.com, Lunatic cafe for romance readers, sims game sites, card decorating,
Oh no, J Perry! You’re right. I’ve created a monster with this blog! Now I’M going to discover dozens of new sites I’ll have to visit! Oog!
Well… I’m a librarian… a MEDIA librarian…
I spend my life online, searching for books, DVDs and other stuff. I deal in weird sites.
I LOVE weird sites.
And I’m new to blogging, but am hooked, I think. It sure is fun! And I couldn’t LIVE without romance author’s sites. Every time I find a new author, I desperately search for their site to glom their backlists.... (so that investment IS worth it, truly).
And I love most of the sites y’all have listed: there are a couple of new ones...including that great Victorian shopping one.
In the spirit, and limiting myself to only one, here’s my current favourite little weird shopping site:
http://www.quipscards.com/index.php
Some of these are silly but some are really really funny.
My two favourites....
http://www.quipscards.com/product_info.php?products_id=183
http://www.quipscards.com/product_info.php?products_id=184
Yes, I know. I’m weird. And proud of it.
http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org
It’s the most comprehensive Harry Potter site on the net. Very well laid out and run. I love the discussion boards because nobody is my normal life reads Harry Potter and so I have no one to theorize with! Mostly everyone has something new and insightful to say. It’s great!
I do also love The Republic of Pemberley.
I also love TWoP. It’s so much fun!
I play the Irish Tin Whistle (aka pennywhistle) and there is a site called Chiff and Fipple dedicated to the instrument (http://www.chiffandfipple.com/). It’s very informative but also a very hysterical website. If you want to learn all about tin whistles, I highly suggest you read the FAQ’s. C & F also has a great messageboard community that I visit several times a day.
I’m also a big NASCAR fan, and jayski (http://www.jayski.com/) is the place for all the news and rumors surrounding the sport.
You asked for it Teresa!!
-http://www.bookcrossing.com/ A site that ‘releases’ books for other to find and register, interesting site.
- http://www.grand-illusions.com/ interesting optical illusions
- http://www.nnbd.com/ a font of trivia
- http://www.knitty.com/ great resource for free knitting patterns, articles, etc…
and last but not least a real time-burner, yes, Youtube, I have to pull myself off that thing, curses!!
I wish we could edit!!
the third one in NNBD.com, not the smut that comes up..sorry!
I visit my local library website at least once a day.
Also http://refdesk.com/ for a little of everything.
Squawkradio.com . Also Running with Quills most every day.
My newspapers on line daily.
Author websites frequently.
Thanks all for the new ones to try.
Most of my online time that is not job related is spent on the EJ/JQ bulletin board, here, or on Word Wenches or another of a handful of romance blogs/bulletin boards. I try to visit Barbara Samuel’s blog, A Writer Afoot, frequently just for the joy of reading her beautiful prose.
When I have time to play, I go to a Thinks.com site “Words and Word Play: A gallimaufry of logodaedaly and verbalistic legerdemain” where I enjoy their Tom Swifties, Clerihews, and other verbal delights. (http://thinks.com/words/index)
I also love The Authentic History Center, (http://www.authentichistory.com), a fascinating collection of images and sounds from all eras of American popular culture.
I love TWOP! I visit it everyday. I also visit perezhilton.com everyday. All the Hollywood gossip one needs, with as much snark as TWOP. And of course here
Oh, these are so good. I’ll be honest, I don’t surf too much. Just a few places that I’m sure none of you would be interested in. But my daughter finds the most incredible sites. One is Lets sing it .com, where you can find the lyrics to almost any song.
And the other (which I’ll have to get from my daughter when she gets home from school) is a site which shows REAL laws still active in all states that have never been abolished and are absolutely ridiculous.
Ex: You can’t whale hunt in Oklahoma.
And you can only beat your wife on the steps of the court house in SC, and only on Sundays.
I’ll repost later today with that site.
I definitely agree on TWOP and imdb. Love the internet for that sort of thing. There are way too many sites that I go to regularly, I have half a dozen blogs that I visit daily including this one.
Another one of my favorites is http://www.crazyauntpurl.com/ I love Laurie - her tagline says it all. “The true-life diary of a thirty-something, newly divorced, displaced Southern obsessive-compulsive knitter who has four cats. (Because nothing is sexier than a divorced woman with four cats.)
I’m making a list of new ones from today’s comments. Oops where did the time go?
I’m not a big net surfer . . . its usually the news sites that I hit or SR or EJ’s BB. So - sorry if this is a dumb question - I don’t follow the show 24—I’m still trying to find out what’s so funny about the above picture?? Seriously . . .
Two of my favorite sites are spoofs on corporate agencies. You know the wordy, “we’re-so-far-above-you” agencies. The sites are:
http://www.huhcorp.com
http://www.duhcorp.com/
I also love the sites Teresa mentioned, and of course http://www.amazon.com, http://www.weather.com, http://www.mapquest.com. I do everything on the web, even grocery shop.
Yes, Ms. Mary, I had to yell at Xtina the other day for sending me over to YouTube to look at a video. Do you know how many funny cat videos there are over there? I could spend the rest of my life!
My husband says: all that you ever want or need to know is on the “Net”. Since I have only had access to the internet for a year now I am fairly new at “surfing”. I know..... it is almost a crime, but I did not get my own computer until last spring. However, when I took the jump to get a computer I got WIFI also.
SquawkRadio is the first blog I found and from there the monster continues to grow.
http://weirdbabe.typepad.com/threadbared/ this sight is funny. They find patterns from days gone by and add snarky comments or build stories around the featured clothing item. Good for a giggle or two.
http://www.thesneeze.com/ This sight is another one that I have had a few good laughs over. The funniest post on this sight is called “Steve, Don’t eat it!”
Happy Surfing Chickies!
hmm, let’s see; besides squawkradio, I’m also a frequent imdb referencer, and wikipedia is always open on my desktop - for those little niggling things that you have a sudden need to know the whole history of. A more convenient tool I never knew! When I need a laugh, theonion.com delivers. And of course, like Ms. Mary, youtube is my ultimate time-eater. The first time I discovered it I stayed up all night watching every Tony’s broadcast ever recorded and then every interview Hugh Jackman ever gave. Hey, who can blame me? That guy is sex on legs. Youtube is such fun for finding classic bugs bunny cartoons that you barely remember or hysterical American Idol auditions. Oh, that reminds me: I also spend a fair amount of time at abc.com and nbcuni.com catching up on shows like grey’s, the bachelor, brothers and sisters (i love this show! you can watch the whole season online!), 30 rock, and andy barker, p.i.
and then after all that is finished, I start my homework hehe.
Oh and on YouTube, I also discovered you can watch clips from all of these classic episodes of GUIDING LIGHT. You know--the ones you never forgot but thought you’d never see again? Sigh…
Everyday I check out Best Friends Animal Society. That site keeps me going on the worst of days. Trully inspiring animals and the people dedicated to them. IMDb & Rotten Tomatoes also on my list of favorites. Box Office Mojo is informative. And the site for everything Gerard Butler: Gerard Butler.net Officially Unofficial…
Your Victorian site sounds interesting, I’ll have to take a look.
Teresa: I hate to do this to you but...my daughter’s all time favorite website is randomkittengenerator.com it’s all just pics of kittens.
For news I read fark.com and boingboing.net they’re very informative and sometimes funny. fark is one of the most read sites on the internet..lots of news links submitted by readers..
gofugyourself is a funny site about poorly dresses celebrities..yer rich, there’s no excuse sometimes.
Wil Wheaton does a review of Star Trek: Next Gen that you HAVE to read..it’s hilarious..I just don’t remember where it is..sorry!
addictinggames.com LOTS of free games..try boneless girl..it’s very zen
Yes, Teresa, not to mention every ‘80’s music video produced, as well as interviews w/ the musicians! sheesh, too much!
Ooh, Teresa, that Victorian site is divine. I asked for a few of their catalogs already.
Here my blogroll…
http://www.candicehern.com/board

http://www.romancevagabonds.com
http://gofugyourself.typepad.com
That is of course poorly DRESSED celebrities. *sigh*
My best recommendation - urban dictionary. You NEED this site. It’s definitely not recommended reading for the squeamish but I think it’s a very very valuable tool. Most of it is user edited. I also highly recommend it if you have teenagers. If they’ve ever said anything you just don’t quite understand you can look it up in the urban dictionary. Just don’t browse too much if you are easily offended. Lots of definitions for weird sex acts.
Best example: In a recent book the author (I’m not naming names) referred to a drug as ‘dope’ which is a term used for heroin and NOT typically marijuana any more..it’s all here in the urban dictionary..very good resource for modern slang.
You WILL learn more than you want to know and some of it is pretty sick but it’s all things ‘the kids’ are saying these days.
Aaaah, Stacy N! Not kittens! Oh no!!! So unfair when you know I have a “weakness”.
Terri, frantically sprinting for the exit
For the animal lovers:
So very addictive...like lots of the others listed (many of which I visit regularly).
Hi Teresa--
I LOVED Despair, Inc.—especially the “Disservice” tab which transfers you to a page with their logo:
“We’re not happy until you’re not happy.”
My favorite video is on Youtube.com from Mad TV - Stuart gets his picture taken. I have NEVER laughed so hard in my life. People who have gone through the maddening process of taking a child’s photo will enjoy this!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=00okMN9DnjA
Click here: YouTube - Mad Tv- Stuart get his picture taken.
Best,
Sophia
These are the sites I check daily
http://www.eyeonsoaps.com (abc soaps)
http://www.thegoddessblogs.com
http://www.livejournal.com
http://www.amazon.com
http://www.stpixels.com (online church)
http://www.ebay.com
oh and of course the Squawk site!
I had never seen despair.com. OMG. I love the adversity one (that which does not kill me, postpones the inevitable)...
I generally hop from e-mail, to ADWOFF (Nora Roberts site), to SBTB (smart bitches who love trashy books) then Christina Dodd’s s(played her one-card-at-a-time-over-solitaire until my wrists started to hurt) site and this site
Sam
I love to surf the internet and I usually go to a LOT of websites but I’ll just post the ones I go to daily:
Great retro website about movies, tv shows, commecials, etc. with video clips- http://retrojunk.com/
Another sorta retro website that has all the same stuff as above but also has tons of funny articles about the stuff-
http://www.x-entertainment.com/
Lyrics to forgotten children’s movies, tv shows, etc-
http://www.aquamarine.nu/lyrics/index.php
Daily author websites:
http://blog.laurellkhamilton.org/
http://femmesfatales.typepad.com/
http://www.thelipstickchronicles.typepad.com/
http://www.plotmonkeys.com/
http://www.runningwithquills.com/
http://thegoddessblogs.com/
Then of course I’ve got to check out my subscriptions on http://www.YouTube.com to see if any new old cartoons and tv shows have been put up (I just watched a ton of Faerie Tale Theatre the other day!). There are quite a few more sites I go through daily (including http://www.wikipedia.org and http://www.imdb.com) but if I stay here chatting all day I’ll never get to them!
Have a great day!
Oh crud, I forgot about two of my favorites: http://www.tv.com & http://www.fanpop.com
For celebrtiy things I go to Pink is the new blog. He’s great!
I also read: The Goddess Blogs, Smart Bitches Who love trashy novels, SquawkRadio, Argh Ink, Stuff on my Cat, and I love the Victorian Trading Co.. I’ve been receiving their catalogs for years.
I visit Squawkradio daily (my sanity saver)and Sharon Lee and Steve Miller’s Fledgling project page weekly. They’re adding a chapter a week and they are the authors of one of my favorite SF worlds. I also like engrish.com for a grin. It has hilarious Enlgish translations from different Asian countries. There’s also one for Chinese and Japanese tattoos that didn’t quite say what the wearer wanted them to say, but I can’t remember the site and don’t have it on my favorites. Be warned - if you ever get a tattoo, check the characters first! And the artist, but you know what I mean!
SHRIEK! Why, why, why did I look at the comments?! Now I have so many sites to go look at!
My fav from despair.com:
PRETENSION: The downside of being better than everyone else is that people tend to assume you’re pretentious.
Sam said, “Christina Dodd’s s(played her one-card-at-a-time-over-solitaire until my wrists started to hurt) site”
You can play it three cards at a time, Sam. Until your wrists hurt. Teresa won’t play it because I’m on the queen.
One site I love—http://www.woot.com Great stuff, good prices, great descriptions.
I love Victorian Trading Co., Teresa, my mother and I have been getting it for years. I usually want one of everthing.
With so many book sites on the web, who has time for anything else, lol. I’m usually at book sites, music sites - love listing to my favorite classic rock station which also airs online—http://www.q1043.com . Other than that I shop, manage my finances and usually surfing to all sorts of reference sites, medical, finances and otehrwise - anything I want to know, even find manuals for old electronics or cars that went missing.
I visit Sqauwk Radio, Fresh Fiction, and Writerspace.
I visit Shop.com (a gazillion stores in one website), about 50 author websites, Squawk Radio which I discovered in December and thegoddessblogs which I discovered in April.
A couple of my favorite time wasters:
Fling the Cow at http://home.wanadoo.nl/rijvers1/moorhexen/flingthecow.swf
Fireworks at http://www1.jawink.ne.jp/koji-y/java/jhanabi3e.htm
Insanity Test (hint: turn up your speakers before clicking) http://www.savageresearch.com/humor/insanityTest.html
Enjoy!!
Sorry about Fling the Cow. For some strange reason, it works with my bookmarked pages, but not when I copy the addy and paste it to link it. I’m not sure why.
The other two sites do work, however.
To make up for the cows, try Viking Kittens at http://users.wolfcrews.com/toys/vikings/
I love IMDB as well for settling those arguments (yes Nikki from Heroes was the D in Legally Blonde), but also for when i find my latest favorite actor (for their amazing talent only, Ryan Gosling and Daniel Craig), then I can go find their backlist including upcoming television showings! too easy isn’t it?
Most of my surfing - other than Squawkradio - is profession related. TThe other site I love which is all things Jane Austen and its The Republic of Pemberley. I never get tired of this site: http://www.pemberley.com/
Oh yes, and I do check out the book review on NPR regularly - another great site to visit daily (npr.org).
