I browsed my library and took notessmile

Susan E. Phillips wrote Just Imagine. Its set after the Civil War.
James Patterson wrote The Jester with Andrew Gross. (amazing book!) Its set in the Crusades.

Other authors I found who have done both are:
Johanna Lindsey--Until Forever and Heart of a Warrior are contemporary.
Jude Deveraux--she has a huge mix now. Its been years since she’s done a historical.
Sandra Brown.
Sherrilyn Kenyon writes historicals under Kinley MacGregor.
Jayne A. Krentz writes under Amanda Quick.
From a readers point of view I like it when an author tries something new.

Good luck!

Well, I’ll say this, I’m came very late to the Connie Brockway party, but I’ve got my hat, and my kazoo, and am part of the band so, I’m really sorry to see you leaving the historical arena.

That being said, I read the AAR interview, and I understand your reasoning. And truly, I’d read your grocery list if you decide to publish it. So...I’ll keep recommending your books to anyone who will sit still long enough to listen. And I’ll spend at least 20 nights a year savoring All Through the Night and your other past treats.

Anne Stuart writes both and I think she started with contemporaries and category romances, not to many historicals, but her historicals are very good.

Gee, Connie, it’s a good thing this person is hypothetical or I’d think the description matched YOU.

I just hate the possibility that someone is second-guessing what I’m going to be in the mood to read in a year, and then asking someone to write it.

Well I’m very sad to hear about your hiatus but I think you will do great in contemporary and I know that your books will still have the same quality.  I will always be a great fan and I’ll continue buying your books...just as contemporaries.  And when you write more historicals I will jump up and down and turn somersaults.

I agree with Michelle. I came to the historical romance genre laye(apprx 3 years back at the age of 18) so I’ve basically gone through the “years” with nearly everyone writing this blog at an accelerated pace and am saddened to discover that semi-new-to-me authors had either stopped writing historicals before I ever knew a thing about the genre, or have been setting it aside quite recently. I also find it baffling that best-sellers(who’ve proven their success with a consistent track record) are discouraged from writing “outside of the box"--shouldn’t best-selling authors have earned the right to write what they want to(within the HEA boundaries)? Scaaary.

I wrote 13 contemps for various lines and houses then did 3 medievals.  I started out always planning to write historicals so I don’t know why it took me so long, but once I did those three, I felt done, and went back to contemps!  Sometimes what you think you want isn’t what you want.

Connie, I hope your “ill-fated attempt” wasn’t As You Desire! Because I loved it, and it’s generally regarded as a darn good book.  OK, so I don’t know what the print run was for it, but still....

I’ve really enjoyed your books over the years (got My Surrender today, wahoo!) and I echo those who say we’ll miss you in the historical aisles.  Good luck with the contemp; I’ll see you there!

Thank you. I’m really excited to write it. It’s a little “off,” the characters are a little “off” and it should be tons of fun at least to write. Hopefully to read.
